School setting up email account

Straw poll, just interested really:

If your child was or has been given a basic email account as part of their school activity in the ICT curriculum, how old were/are they? Would you want to be told about this and possibly agree (or not) before this came into use?

I am talking about an emailing facility that comes within another package, but DC are encouraged to use this at home and can also use the email element to send messages to other children in their year while they are out of school hours.

How old are the children.

I’d want to be told

That's what I'm wondering - when would you think this was pretty much ok?

Dd was given a student one in y7. It's only used within school and she uses it to forward me info or get me to send stuff to her.

Nandocushion · 10/10/2018 02:55

G5 (in USA), so 8 yo I think he was

DS (7yo, US 2nd grade) was given an email address to sign into the chrome books they often use in class. They didn't let parents know/ ask permission first. I was a bit irritated as he can now use it to sign into YouTube under a different account than the one I set up for him and bypass the controls I put in place.

How old??

LooksBetterWithAFilter · 10/10/2018 06:50

P4 in my area in Scotland so 8. Ds2 has just started using the package skooville or whatever it’s called and they can send emails to their friends. We did get permission letters for it. We also sign a general thing at the start of every year to give permission for general internet use that may include email.
Because I’ve been asked for permission already I’m not sure whether I’d be bothered about not being asked.

Year 7 - the content is monitored though by IT

AvoidingDM · 10/10/2018 07:15

We were asked to sign a permission slip in P1 (age 4-5) for email and internet access - including a bit for kids to sign saying they wouldn't abuse it etc etc etc

I never signed it and suspect it was done anyway!

Whole school, but very restricted here. Can’t mail anyone that doesn’t have a school address.

Troels · 10/10/2018 07:46

Year 5. She still uses it for school things in Y9

Wow. Thank you. Sorry for the delay in coming back to this.

DD just started y3, is 8 in a month or 2. This was done in the first week back to school without any warning or permission seeking. They can only 'email' within their year and apparently the teacher can see messages, although I would be interested to see if this actually happens.

What's happening, though, is that some of the kids are messaging while not in school (which leads to great eagerness to log in to the package, thought I might stave this off for a couple more years at least), and there is a bit of disappointment when messages die down, which I am very relieved about. I would like to bring this up with the teacher and am thinking about how to do it. So far I think trying to find out exactly how it all works, checking, everything, is one angle.

Y1 so age 5-6 we were informed in writing but weren't asked to sign a permission slip.
