cutting toe nails

Hello mums

I am new here and i have an issue with my 9 year old who refused to have his toe nails cut.
He is crying, refuse to do it, saying that it is not comfortable, that it hurts.
My husband and l have to hold him tight so it could be done.
However we tried pretty much everything and l am running out of ideas.
Is some of you have been through this problem with your children and if so is there any solutions to make this easier and painless.
Any advice please, l am a bit out of ideas to make him do it without tears or is it deeper in him and do l need to see the doctor?
thank you

My OH is 42 and still like this. I literally have to pin him down and did just that the other night. One was so long his nail has lifted from the nail bed. The rest were folding under his toes. It's bloody disgusting.

The only advice is wait until theyre soft after a bath then pounce !

Unless your DC has something wrong with his nails/toes then no they do not need to see a doctor.

Could they cut themselves using clippers? It might be better for them if they have control

things you could try:

-doing it while he is the bath (the bath water will soften the nail)
-let him play on the ipad while you do it
-have a reward system (2 nails cut= 1 chocolate button, then progress to 3 nails, 4 and so on)
-worst comes to worst, do it while he is asleep.

thank you for your answers.
He has nothing wrong with his toe nails but he plays football quite a lot and need to have short nails and it is the war each time.
Yes we tried after bath and reward chart of all sorts NOTHING will do.

I recall my DDad cutting my toenails and it did hurt! Used scissors (days before nail clippers) and it felt like he was pulling my nails off!
He is old enough to wield scissors at 9, surely. Let him do it, but explain how and show him on yourself.

ok l will try the chart sounds good and he might like that.
Thanks for the ideas.
If you have any more please tell me

Don’t ever cut the nails after bath, they are soft & much more likely to tear which can end up then causing other problems - one being ingrown toe nail

File regularly instead

Can't help with the sensation but I find not being able to see it happen helps. Mine lie on their stomach watching TV and bend their legs back towards their bums. I sit facing backwards and cut that way. It seems less stressful, plus you can apply a bit of leverage if they start to wiggle

My dd is 15 and still hates it , she won't cut her own nails so I text her and request her company for a mandatory pedicure . She squeals and shouts through it but knows I won't take no for an answer so we get through it . My son on the other hand who has special needs loves it !! Children are weird !! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Filing them sounds like a good idea.

My eldest is like this. Screams the place down whenever we have to cut them. Once I actually thought the neighbours would ring social services because he was screaming and crying and wailing for ages.

I have no suggestions other than try to do it when he's asleep. My DS sleeps in a bunk bed though, so not the easiest!

Or try a 'tickly' electric dremel style nail file. Frequently find them as christmas gifts for polishing nails etc, one attachment is great at filing.
