I saw this post shared on Facebook earlier and it got me thinking about how businesses get away with paying people low wages and then have wages topped up by tax credits and the like which is basically tax payers subsiding people to own businesses. I know businesses do contribute to the economy in some ways though, or am I way off the mark?

Do you agree with this?

I totally agree with that. And oooooh, I'm about to have a rant.

In past mistakes I have worked for a few tiny employers consisting of 3-5 people, mainly run by married couples or two friends who started a business together. They are always the worst employers, and more relevant to this thread, they always have the highest sense of entitlement. I understand that people are emotionally invested in their business, but if you employ an outside person in an admin position, it is totally unrealistic to expect them to care about the business as much as you. Sure, you need someone who can do a basically good job, but get off your high horses and stop pretending you're doing them a favour by letting them work for you, regardless of the salary.

People who are new to running a business are the worst. Never again.

This is my boss in a nutshell - he pays another employee £10,000 less than the going rate for their job & everyone else is barely above minimum wage & he doesn't understand that if the business can't pay the salary that the job is worth in the current market then the business is not viable.

He's as entitled as they come & thinks we should all be grateful that he is doing us a favour by letting us work for him - 80% of the workforce are currently looking for new jobs.

chapthedoor · 09/10/2018 18:24

Whiskey do you work in my office WinkGrin

I do agree she's spot on with that

Furiosa · 09/10/2018 18:28

Yes, she's right.

whiskeysourpuss · 09/10/2018 18:44

chapthedoor I'm hoping so because I can't believe that there's 2 fucknuts like my boss allowed to freely roam the streets.

He also has the same attitude to customers - no advertising or signage & if people can't find us at the arse end of an industrial estate in a mediocre town they must be thickos.

Hasn't got a bloody clue how to run a business... a direct quote "I don't need to know employment laws" Hmm

chapthedoor · 11/10/2018 15:49

My boss doesn't advertise either !!!! All through word of mouth (I.e his posh friends who are all a nightmare)

They can afford to pay more they just don't want to and instead swan off on 4 holidays a year to places like South Africa while I only get 3 weeks per year (because I work part time and they take all of the bank holidays off of my entitlement)

As soon as my youngest DC starts school next August I am out of there thank god !

chapthedoor · 11/10/2018 15:51

I'd rather work full time and get proper holidays, benefits and a decent salary than there.

Flashingbeacon · 11/10/2018 16:03

I don’t think you should be allowed to employ people who then need top up benefits. It’s a ridiculous system. But the people that make the decisions are not the people who will be in danger of needing benefits but are the people from businesses keeping payroll costs down.
DH’s business pays the living wage and it was shameful to see how pleased people were with a few extra pennies an hour.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/10/2018 16:32

Yes, totally agree.

Pretty much all businesses (not just small businesses) work like this.

Amazon, well everyone not paying a living wage is.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/10/2018 16:34

The thing is - YOU ARE working to support those businesses!

You're paying tax so Philip Green et al can hang about on his yacht doing fuck all.

WE ARE paying for that through taxation. If businesses were FORCED to pay £20 an hour then we wouldn't have to watch those twats sat around masturbating and county their money.

LaurieFairyCake · 11/10/2018 16:35

*counting

Flashingbeacon · 11/10/2018 16:49

The obvious solution is for people to refuse to work for below the living wage. But of course when you’re working for so little you can’t afford to be out of work long enough for anyone to notice.
It’s the same argument with migrants “taking our jobs”. Be angry with the employers prepared to pay them less than they can pay you.
