Urgent help: What audition song please? D3 to D5

I have no musical 'knowledge' but I used to sing in a choir I loved. I've been out for about 3 years as we moved country. Just been asked to audition tomorrow night for a local choir. Youtube tells me my range (which is rusty) is D3 to D5. What song can I sing please? probably needs to be not current music as I don't hear much radio etc so won't have time to learn from scratch; needs to be something I can just listen and copy another singer with as I don't know how to change the key for learning it. I'd really love any suggestions please as I'd really like to join the choir! I'm also at the tail end of a chest infection so I'm a bit nervous about too many things going wrong...

Do you mean you're a mezzo soprano? I can't get with all this D3 and so forth.

AjasLipstick · 09/10/2018 12:17

What songs do you know? If you only have a day to become confident...it makes sense to choose a song you like singing.

sentenceinterrupted · 09/10/2018 12:24

I was an alto 2 in an all girl's choir; all the songs I 'know' are the bass parts of other songs where someone else had the melody! I tend to sing along to the parts I can reach of whatever my 9 year old is listening to - which used to be whatever his choir was singing. Disney tunes and so forth. maybe some old Robbie Williams from my end! ... but I don't think I'll have the range to get it all.

off to google Moana songs...

There is a beautiful choral version of creep by Radiohead that the alto part has the turn for a lot of

We have been doing a lot of greatest showman with Choir

ABBA

Sky fall by Adele is quite low

AjasLipstick · 09/10/2018 12:58

OOh I love Jinkx Monsoon's Creep

Which are your fave singers OP? No good me saying "Sing this one!" when you hate or don't relate to the singer.

sentenceinterrupted · 09/10/2018 13:21

Thanks ladies; sky fall might work.... I've been snatching out bursts of 'what a wonderful world' around the place, I can vaguely remember an acapella version from about 10 years ago which had lots of melody, though I'll need to find a bit of backing support as I'm so rusty. Might also have a quick look at greatest showman as some of those might work.

I'm afraid that since kids, music has gone out the window and all the singers I like are all from 15 years ago; I don't necessarily even remember the songs (I tried a bit of Norah jones earlier)..

"I believe I can fly". Lovely.

AjasLipstick · 09/10/2018 13:55

Doesn't matter that they're old...15 years isn't old for a song anyway! People sing songs way older than that at auditions every day.

sentenceinterrupted · 09/10/2018 14:01

Mild / ajas ... I think I'm going to walk and pick up the kids from school and just pick something with a clear head after that (and then sing it for the next 24 hours!)....

What about My House from Matilda. Dd1 did that as an audition piece and it sounded fantastic.

DrPeppersPhD · 09/10/2018 14:55

I'm not that girl is a nice one, from wicked. Most things by Pink, depends on how confident your high notes are really.

sentenceinterrupted · 09/10/2018 20:54

Phew... . I've got a reprieve 'til next week, which is very good as my voice is definitely affected by the chest infection I'm still trying to kick.

They're looking for something to showcase the 'lower' range. I've been singing Louis Armstrong (wonderful world) and Robbie Williams (angels), but kicking into those really low notes on the get go is a bit hard. If I had half a brain about how to transcribe music or play the piano (so I could listen to what I had to sing, exactly), it would be easier, but you do what you can with what you got!

I sang my house in the choir, so I know it (at least the alto 2 part); I'll see if I can find a version, thanks, Witch...

DrPeppers, I sadly don't know that song well enough, though I've realised I've definitely got a bias towards musical theatre type songs!

Do you know any Carole King? Dd has sung those songs for musical theatre assessments.

sentenceinterrupted · 09/10/2018 21:21

Definitely know some Carole King ... but probably not well enough. I might see if I can find a voice coach for a lesson or two or even just some time to find me a good song before next week. I'm a bit on song overload at the moment; even hubby has commented on how much I've been listening to and attempting to sing (in the key that's on youtube)..

Hi OP, a voice coach for a session or two is definitely a good idea, and you might decide you fancy having more regular lessons.

The trick to the low notes is to relax into them and keep your head up; don't dip your head down as you'll close your throat and stop them coming out properly.

It definitely doesn't matter if the song you pick is an old one! If you're looking for something for a low voice, have a look at Hello (the Adele one) or Hallelujah.

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 09/10/2018 21:44

Viva Forever? Mel B has the low part. Iirc it goes down to B below middle C.
