Avoiding a place where something awful happened.,.

Something awful happened in my local shop recently (a murder) and I thought i’d still be able to go in - but when it came to it I couldn’t bring myself to. I was surprised at myself, for feeling so strongly about it...

Got me thinking about people who buy houses where awful crimes have taken place etc. On reflection, I don’t think I would.

Would it bother you? Have you experienced similar i.e. not wanting to go somewhere because of what happened there?

I would have been in as soon as I was allowed but that's because I'm a morbid gory cow haha!

Patienceisvirtuous · 08/10/2018 22:05

Haha @sickenedbyguilt!

Usuallly i’m a bit morbid too. Maybe i’m getting soft in my old age. Maybe i’ve changed since I had DS.

It was really grisly and I couldn’t bear to be where the poor soul lost their life 😰

Was the incident in the news?
I've always been like that my perfect job would be a forensic scientist!

JellieEllie · 08/10/2018 22:16

Same here sickened I've read far too many serial killer books and scene of crime documentary's to be phased by anything now

Patienceisvirtuous · 08/10/2018 22:16

Yes, it was in the news... it was very shocking and tragic :(

...I’ve always fancied being a criminal profiler myself :)

@JellieEllie, what’s your favourite serial killer book?

OP posts:
JellieEllie · 08/10/2018 22:23

The Jeffrey Dahmer story, or any of the books about him to be honest.
John Wayne Gacy book the one his lawyer wrote I think I can't remember what it's called though,
Harold Shipman, I've read most books and documentaries about him too.
I have mixed books on my kindle of interviews with the most prolific serial killers.
There's quite a lot of crime scene and murder footage on the dark web too which is pretty sadistic I know! 🙈

ComtesseDeSpair · 08/10/2018 22:28

I figure in the long history of civilisation, terrible things have happened just about everywhere. I don’t actively seek out morbid situations, and it seems a little ghoulish to find entertainment in somebody’s murder, but I’m not bothered by being somewhere where death has happened.

Spudlet · 08/10/2018 22:30

Someone was murdered in a popular dog walking spot near to hear a year or so ago, and I still won't walk at the end where the poor man died. I don't know why, really. It just would feel... wrong.

Spudlet · 08/10/2018 22:31

here 🙈

LEMtheoriginal · 08/10/2018 22:34

A local cafe owner commited suicide about four years ago Not in the cafe but we always chatted to him. I haven't set foot in the cafe since. I just cant

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 08/10/2018 22:34

A family friend was murder in her home a few years back. I drive past it reasonably regularly and it has changed hands more than typically for the area since she died. The current new owner is doing massive renovations to it at present, particularly in the area of the house where our friend died. I have no idea if they know what happened there.

I would be fine living somewhere that eg, an elderly person died gently, but I don't think I could where there was a violent event.

khaleesi71 · 09/10/2018 07:13

We used to live in a house where a poor lady was attacked on her front doorstep. She died of her injuries in hospital. It didn't bother us and we felt safe there. A tragic event but it was nothing to do with us. The house had been remodelled as well. I felt a bit odd walking past all the tributes and flowers on London Bridge just after the terrorist attacks - very sad. Life must go on though.

Morgan12 · 09/10/2018 07:18

JellieEllie are you saying you watch footage of murders on the dark web?

Patienceisvirtuous · 09/10/2018 07:29

Did you mean murder scene footage JellieEllie? I would absolutely not go on the dark web - isn’t it illegal?

Re serial killer books - I found Wicked Beyond Belief which details the police hunt to find Peter Sutcliffe fascinating.

Mother and khaleesi I agree with both viewpoints, i’m on the fence, but probably swaying towards being too uncomfortable with a violent death that I was aware of, that i’d rather not live there...

When I was a student, the owner of our local corner shop was murdered in a family feud over the Christmas holidays.

6 months later at the end of term, our stretch of road was cordoned off by police. We were allowed into our house. 5 doors down, someone had been stabbed to death in a drugs feud.

Ironicly I lived in a "nice" part of the city! They were co-incidences and no threat to people not personally involved.

I was struck more by a high profile stranger murder in my home town a mile from where I lived. She was only a couple of years older than me.

Growing up in an old house, people will have died there. It had a nice atmosphere though. I don't know if I would know if there was a bad atmosphere associated with sad events. Extensive home improvements can do a lot to change an atmosphere although some notorious properties have been demolished and memorial gardens left to the victims in very high profile cases.

PoliticalBiscuit · 09/10/2018 08:08

The dark web is not illegal it's perfectly fine to use and some will use it for normal legitimate reasons.

PepperSteaks · 09/10/2018 08:50

A little girl died in tragic circumstances near us. I took DD to the nearby park but couldn’t stay more than 5 minutes. There was such a heavy sadness in the air.

JellieEllie · 09/10/2018 12:33

The dark web isn't illegal. Don't know who said it was but it isn't !
I've seen all sorts of crazy videos throughout my life. I was in a gore group online once where such videos were posted all the time so yes I've witnessed murders. (On video)
However I've never accessed the dark web I don't know how to, I just know what type of stuff is on there.

JellieEllie · 09/10/2018 12:33

@Patienceisvirtuous thanks for that I'm going to hunt that one down!

Kraggle · 09/10/2018 12:37

There is a park near us where a young girl was stabbed and subsequently died. I will never set foot in it again.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/10/2018 12:39

It wouldn’t bother me unless the person working there was complicit or the person was someone I knew well.

mistermagpie · 09/10/2018 12:54

It would bother me I think. My friends dad killed himself in their house (hung himself in the hall) and I always hated going into their house after that.

Jellie - you've seen murders on video? What do you mean? Like, who was committing these murders and why would it be filmed?

JellieEllie · 09/10/2018 13:05

@mistermagpie they were usually cartel videos from other countries. Beheadings and torture. I have no idea why they film them maybe a warning to other gang members I aren't sure. They were horrific though but I do have a strong stomach and am morbidly curious about weird things 😂

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 09/10/2018 13:15

Jellieellie Why would you want to watch that? Isn't it a snuff video?
