Nursery doing DD's hair

This isn't an AIBU, I'm just wondering about this, is it normal for nursery to restyle your child's hair? I knew they were brushing it every day (even though I never put a brush in because DD hair unruly hair and I never expected they'd be able to with the way she wriggles and screams blue murder!) but I picked her up today and it's been plaited.

I don't mind, I'm just wondering if it's normal?

Maybe nits are going round and they're helping my plaiting it out the way.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 08/10/2018 20:29

My daughter always used to come home with different hairstyles!

TheCatFromOuterSpace · 08/10/2018 20:30

Ours used to do this, I think it was because dd would take her pony tail out herself and the staff would put it back up again. Except they were much better at it than me and she used to come home with lovely French plaits and so on.

Mine used to do it every now and then, there was one teacher my daughter really loved and she did lovely French braids.

They also used to give my son a Tintin-style quiff sometimes with a bit of soap and water (really weak, like bubble mix really), just for fun. Some kids love it.

SparkyBlue · 08/10/2018 20:33

My daughter often came with lovely hairstyles that one of the girls in the toddler room used to do. I was always delighted and a bit jealous that I couldn't do anything half as nice and also DD would never sit still for me to fix her hair lol.

ohlittlepea · 08/10/2018 20:33

Our first one did, I thought at least it showed they were spending some nice time giving some positive touch. It's deffo not part of the EYFS though 😂

Phalarope · 08/10/2018 20:33

Ours were endlessly sticking French plaits in - they had a box of bobbles and clips and rollers for playing “hairdressers” but I strongly suspect the staff of liking the game the most Grin

OddBoots · 08/10/2018 20:34

It's not unusual, especially if they have hairdressers out in the role play area or sometimes if one child comes with a hairstyle that the others would like to have copied.

MiddlingMum · 08/10/2018 20:34

I was always grateful that DD would go to playgroup with a basic ponytail then come home with something more elaborate and long-lasting.

Thebluedog · 08/10/2018 20:34

My dd used to ask nursery to do her hair

guiltynetter · 08/10/2018 20:36

yes they used to do my daughters sometimes. i was grateful because i can only do a basic pony! i only didn’t like it when they put the bobbles in really tight as i always think it must be uncomfortable.

MulticolourMophead · 08/10/2018 20:42

The time spent doing the hair must mean some 1:1 time, so I'd be happy to see different hairstyles, if the nursery my DD went to had someone who liked doing this.

CryingOverSpiltMilk · 08/10/2018 21:47

I don't know how they wrangled her, it must have been whilst she was playing as I've tried myself today to style it with a few bobbles. I'm genuinely happy to see it as I can't French braid for love nor money!

Yes, she often has a new hairstyle!

dobbythedoggy · 08/10/2018 22:33

Normal in the private day nursery I worked in. We did the children's hair, they are always good for someone else! We had a good supply of brushes and barbaside. We had a former hair dresser as one of the nursery nurses and she would occasionally trim the hair of children who found hair dressers too much, with signed permission of course.

HereBeFuckery · 09/10/2018 05:25

I can do decent french plaits on DD, but she used to come home with the most beautiful elaborate plaits in! They also had the trick of making styles stay in her fine, thick hair. Loved it. As did she!

BitOfFun · 09/10/2018 05:30

Yep- my dd goes to a special school, and I'm always in awe of how they can do it and get her to sit still! I think they do it more because she enjoys it from anyone else but me than as a judgement on my own inept efforts.

HSMMaCM · 09/10/2018 06:42

I'm always getting hair style requests from children that I know don't sit still for their parents. It's a great time to chat and connect with children. I hope none of their parents were offended. Maybe put a brush and some hair bobbles in your DD's bag.

Coldhandscoldheart · 09/10/2018 06:45

Yes, as above I’ve been in and seen the girls doing hair a couple of times. The kids seem to stay still for them in a way they wouldn’t at home Confused

SoyDora · 09/10/2018 06:47

They don’t tend to at my DD’s nursery but I wish they would, it would save me a job!

newcupcake · 09/10/2018 06:55

My DD LOVES having her hair done at nursery 🤣 never lets me do it !

smallchair · 09/10/2018 20:52

My kids wouldn't let me near them with a brush yet loved getting their hair done at nursery and would ask the girls there to brush and plait their hair. as one pp has said, it was one to one time which made them feel special in nursery.

Doboopedoo · 09/10/2018 21:29

My DD has short, fine, curly, unruly hair that I can barely get into a decent ponytail, but yet her private nursery manage lovely French plaits. One of the workers apparently couldn’t do them so i thinkDD was her training ground, probably as the biggest challenge!
I never thought of it before as good one to one time but that’s a lovely thought, especially as nursery often seems like a crazy busy place.

RefuseTheLies · 09/10/2018 21:33

My dd won’t let me do her hair before nursery, but takes her clips and hair ties in with her to ask her key worker to do it. I try not to take it personally.

StillMedusa · 09/10/2018 21:49

I am a TA in a special school and yes we sometimes do hair! Quite a few children refuse at home, but will happily have their hair done at school because..well it's school and that's different ! Also playing hairdressers at 'Golden Time' (our end of day play) is great for social and fine motor skills (the kids not just ours Grin)
Some children have sensory issues and we gradually build up time spent (one brush, back away, next time two etc) until the children are relaxed enough that they are ok with hair brushes etc.

I just love plaiting hair , reminds me of when my own girls were small!

  • one day however I was having my hair 'done' by a little lad who loves being the hairdresser when I heard a gasp..'Medusa you do realise H as REAL scissors...!!'' Yes he'd fetched them from the scissors tray and was about to give me a real style change Shock
