Does anyone here earn a reasonable wage, say 30-40k and live in places around Euston, Charing cross etc

Or if not is there anyway 20 minutes commute into these places that is reasonable?

bigchris · 08/10/2018 18:29

Do people actually live near Charing Cross?

RubiksQueen · 08/10/2018 19:15

Lol my ex used to live right round the corner from CHX!

Best bet would be to live in London Bridge area or Waterloo, you might get a rental in one of the less posh bits (ohhh yes there are some less posh bits). Or something on the Northern line, Kennington, etc.

Twenty minutes from Euston to Colindale is doable. Loads of new flats to rent there.

MotherWol · 08/10/2018 19:21

It’d be difficult on a single income, but very possible for a couple on £60-£70k jointly, or in a flat share. Renting, not buying though. We’re in zone 1 (south of the river) and it’s affordable. Tbh I wouldn’t want to be too close to Euston/Kings Cross, they’ve been gentrified a lot but they’re not the nicest places to walk home at night.

LostInShoebiz · 08/10/2018 19:25

People do live in these areas, especially Euston but places are very, very small if they’re affordable. Or council or Peabody owned.

I would say it's doable if you are prepared to live in a not very nice studio flat or bedsit. You can get a studio flat in the less salubrious parts of Zone 1 for about £950 pcm or a small one bed for about £1100-200 pcm. But for two people I think that would get very old very quickly unless you don't have much stuff and are exceptionally good at sharing space!

If you don't mind saying which station/line you need to commute into and what your monthly budget for rent is including your partners contributions, people may have recommendations. For Euston I would say look on the orange overground line as this is very quick into Euston, so Queen's Park, Kensal Green, Kilburn are areas which are not particularly fancy but liveable and with good transport links.

For Charing Cross I'd look at the various overground rail services which come into the mainline station, maybe places like Blackheath, Greenwich, Hither Green etc...?

The only people I know who live right in the centre of London are not Brits. They are mostly ex pats here for a short time and wanting to be in the centre of things.
