4month old with low grade fever and going abroad. WWYD?

4 month old been ill for over a week. Started off as cold, blocked nose and cough - no temperature. Since Wednesday he’s had a temp on and off. But never got higher than 38.5. Took to doctors on thurs he was fine. No temp, chest clear at the time.

Since Friday night his temp hasn’t gone below 37.5 and is sitting around 38. He's also off his milk but still drinking and not dehydrated and a very big boy so not worried about weight loss.

Now I know this isn’t that high a fever but he seems miserable most of the time and sounds very chesty. If we weren’t flying abroad at 6am Tuesday I would just monitor. But should I get him to see a doctor again to confirm he’s ok to go away? My nightmare scenario is getting abroad and him going downhill and me not speaking the language.

I’d be worried about bronchiolitis at that age. My twins got it at around 2-3 months and it was horrific. How’s his breathing? Any sign of rib recession when he breathes?

That’s what’s on my mind sink as I know that can start out with mild fever and cold. No sign of rib recession though. His breathing is often fast and noisy but ok apart from that. He slept pretty well last night after a horrific night Friday so I thought he was getting over it but his temp is back up. I don’t know what to think. He’s crying loads one minute smiling and chatty the next??!

Yes. Definitely go back to the GP and get them looked at again.

When we first took the twins to hospital, we were told that usually bronchiolitis gets worse over several days, usually worst at day 5 or so, and then improves. One of my boys got worse and worse for six days (we were up watching him 24/7 as he was struggling to breathe), was then hospitalised with a very low oxygen level and stayed in the HDU for 11 days on high flow oxygen. He was a preemie though (still only 5lb at that point), but then the baby in the next bed was absolutely huge and a month or so older and he was really sick too, so you can’t just go off that.

Do you have insurance? Would it be possible to claim if he’s unable to travel? I’d definitely seek advice from a doctor. I’d be worried about going abroad in this situation.

I find babies can mask illness worryingly well and seem quite well and happy until suddenly they’re not. I know how stressful this is. I really hope he turns a corner tomorrow. Are you going somewhere with good healthcare? Do you already have insurance to cover it if he is sick?

BitOfAKerfuffle · 07/10/2018 19:29

In this situation unless significant improvement i wouldn't want to go abroad. My DD has been hospitalized multiple times with bronchiolitis so many times i have lost count. Also when they are so young they can go downhill very quickly we have been ambulanced into hospital quite a few times from the GP and on one of the worst occassions we had been discharged home from hospital literally 3 hours before and then her temperature shot up to 41o and she was totally unresponsive and blue ended up blue lighted and in hospital over a week on tube feed and oxygen
Id keep a very close eye and i hope he is better soon

BitOfAKerfuffle · 07/10/2018 19:32

Any fast breathing and wheeezing needs to be evaluated by a medical professional we have often had high respiratory rate and wheezing with no recessions but her oxygen saturations have still been very low

readysetcake · 07/10/2018 22:52

I do have insurance. But I would send my DH and DD on without us I’d we couldn’t go as we are going to see in laws so not sure I could just claim for my flight. Isike to think there will be good medical care available as we are going to Europe, but I’d be nervous of the communication barrier as it’s not very touristy.

He’s still drinking milk every 3-4 hours (just not as much as usual) and having wet and dirty nappies. His temp has been sitting at 37.7 for most of the day, which I think isn’t actually a fever?

I’m going to see how tonight goes and how he is in the morning and then try and get him into the dr if he’s the same. Thank you for your replies.

Chicken pox is doing the rounds just now. My one year old has just had it. She had a cold and a low grade fever for the week before the spots came out. My older girl has had hand foot and mouth recently with similar symptoms.

One year old was also wheezy with a cough but she gets that way whenever she’s teething

I’d probably go. Presumably your ILs speak the language/ know someone who does/ know an English speaking dr?
