Stockholm /Sweden holiday

Has anyone been to Stockholm on holiday? Am thinking of it for a few days next year and then renting a house in one of the islands.

Any recommendations welcome!

Yes. Who’s going? It’s pretty and relaxed, but very expensive and not much for kids

WipsGlitter · 07/10/2018 20:06

Me, DH and two kids!! 9 and 11. I'd heard it was expensive Sad

Stockholm is nice, but it is eye wateringly expensive. We had 2 half pints of ‘craft’ beer- £25.
Public spaces fab though- lots people live in apartments in city, so parks are their gardens- play spaces for kids were really good.

HermioneWeasley · 07/10/2018 20:12

It’s eye wateringly expensive and I didn’t think there was much to do for our kids (similar age to yours). Maybe we were just crap!

Bunnybigears · 07/10/2018 20:13

I would go to Gothenburg over Stockholm with kids that age. You can still get a house on an island some of which are car free.

Raglansleeve · 07/10/2018 20:18

Check out Skansen and the ship Vasa and the park djursgarden (spellings might be completely off!) - all enjoyed by youngsters in our holiday party.

sakura06 · 07/10/2018 20:33

Yes, Skansen and the Vasa Museum are fantastic! Sweden in the summer is brilliant, especially if you like outdoor activities like swimming, fishing, camping. As everyone has said though, very expensive!

Yutes · 07/10/2018 20:33

Most places don’t accept cash. Card only.

WipsGlitter · 07/10/2018 20:34

Thanks everyone. There's super cheap flights from Dublin which is why I'm considering it. The islands look really lovely.

Tom tits experience- if it’s warm they have ace outdoor water play area.

everywhichway · 07/10/2018 21:53

Vaxholm is a great place to stay in the Archipelago. And boat trips go from it to many other islands every day. If you like Abba - it's a short hop from there to Viggso, where Bjorn and Benny wrote many of their hits!

AveEldon · 07/10/2018 21:57

There is plenty to do in Stockholm with kids
Eating out and especially drinking is expensive

Skansen is good
My kids thought the Vasa was dull and very dark

corythatwas · 07/10/2018 21:58

You can make it a good deal cheaper by simply adapting some of your habits. Drinking out is mega-expensive so don't drink out. Eating out at lunchtime is a good deal cheaper than eating out at night, so if you could manage to live off hot dogs or sandwiches or own catering in the evening and have the Dish of the Day (dagens rätt) at lunch it needn't be much more expensive than at home. A lot of the good things are free: you can swim almost anywhere (there is a beach in the centre of the city), depending on the time of the year you can pick berries, museums are quite reasonably priced.

Annandale · 07/10/2018 21:59

Dont eat out unless you are millionaires. Picnic all the way.

corythatwas · 07/10/2018 22:12

Annandale, you really don't need to be a millionaire to eat the Dish of the Day (usually a choice between 2 and 3) at a Swedish lunch restaurant.

In Gothenburg (which admittedly is rather cheaper than Stockholm) you can get a perfectly decent meal + a soft drink + coffee for around £8; that isn't really any more expensive than Wetherspoons. Even in Stockholm you should get away with a tenner unless you go to the really posh places.

corythatwas · 07/10/2018 22:13

And plenty of places take cash.

VenusClapTrap · 07/10/2018 22:33

Stockholm is gorgeous. We got the boat to Sandhamn Island for the day and it was beautiful.

corythatwas · 07/10/2018 22:38

While church-going may not be the taste of all families, the cathedral (Storkyrkan) has an amazing late-medieval St George; the dragon's scales are made from elk antlers. Also, very good Viking stuff at Historiska museet.

bitheby · 07/10/2018 22:44

It's gorgeous.

I went there after uni as an impoverished student, staying in a youth hostel. Vasa ship is really good, the parks are lovely, art galleries/ design museum. I don't have kids but it's a beautiful city that I'd love to go back to.

corythatwas · 07/10/2018 23:21

If you like parks and stately homes, Drottningholm is brilliant. You get there by boat.

Yutes · 08/10/2018 06:23

Plenty of places do take cash. But at a lot of tourist places they only really accept card. I struggled to use a lot of my krona last year. And I had no idea that card was the preferred method. It was just a tip I wish I had known last year.
