Do you watch TV together as a family?

It's Saturday night and I am watching TV (killing Eve to be precise) . DS is watching you tube on his iPad and DH is playing Fortnite. This is normal for us but are we a typical family or do you all watch TV together like the 'old days' ?

I was just thinking about this yesterday, I always watched tv (especially Saturday night tv) with my parents when I was a kid. Currently, dh and I are watching tv downstairs and dd is in her bedroom watching YouTube and ds playing Fortnite.

We watch Strictly together (DSs are 6 and 10) and The Crystal Maze and A Question of Sport. We used to watch the Michael McIntyre variety type show when it was in its first series, but the second series went out too late. We also watch wildlife documentaries together and things like the plastic programme that was on bbc1 last Monday.

megletthesecond · 06/10/2018 21:39

Not much. But its mainly because the kids play out until late around here.
We've just watched Harry potter on ITV. DD is watching x-factor and I'm on here waiting for DS to finish in the bathroom.

FunSponges · 06/10/2018 21:45

Not much. Britain's Got Talent, Saturday Night Takeaway, Dancing on Ice, DS and DH have just watched Strictly with me. DD (7) asked if we could put Pointless on earlier Grin and if I watch Location Location Location they will watch it. I often wait until they are in bed though as they yap through stuff and it gets on my nerves.

I mainly watch stuff about true crime or prisons so they can't watch a lot of what I watch anyway. And I don't let them watch Eastenders. Me and DH don't often watch the same stuff either. He likes Dr Who, documentaries and Sci fi that I have no interest in so I'll go on my tablet and he watches TV on his tablet if I'm watching crime stuff.

FunSponges · 06/10/2018 21:46

Oh we often have a film night on a Saturday but it will be a kids film which me and DH don't mind.

A580Hojas · 06/10/2018 21:50

No. I will tolerate Bake Off and The Simpsons and Modern Family but not much else that is suitable family viewing.

The teens like Friends, Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn 9-9 and Impractical Jokers.

I like Gogglebox and First Dates which I'm not altogether comfortable watching with them.

We all loathe XFactor, Britain's Got Talent, I'm a Celebrity, Strictly etc and wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

We do sometimes & it’s nice. Watched a bit of Strictly then the beginning of X Factor with DD9 tonight. She amuses me with her comments. DH & I get driven mad by some of the programmes that DD likes though. We have banned “ Cake Boss” & “ Say Yes To The Dress” but “ Outdaughtered” is a hit with all of us ( about the only all girl quins in the US).

C0untDucku1a · 06/10/2018 21:54

We only have one tv. Conscious decision. Me and dh choose programmes we want to watch together. It there are things one watches and the other doesn't, we do that separately. Eg i watch neighbours when dh takes children to bed. He watches some random nonsense when i go to bed. We choose everything in between together. He went out on thursday night and i binge watched the originals. That kind of thing. The children are young and in bed at 7pm. Of course im lying; it is more like 8.30 Angry

Meet0nTheIedge · 06/10/2018 22:04

Yes, quite a bit. Strictly, Bake-off, sports, documentaries, films. We don't all watch everything but there is quite a lot of common ground (DCs are young teens). I don't watch much that's unsuitable for the DCs, DH does but waits for the rest of us to head upstairs (I quite often go up with the DCs at about 10).

DearPrudence · 06/10/2018 22:10

Almost never. DH watches TV, I like to sit in the kitchen with my iPad, and teen DS sits in another room with his laptop. DS and I watch a few things together on his laptop - Taskmaster, Apprentice, and the odd standup comedy programme.

BackforGood · 06/10/2018 22:18

Very rarely.
dc are adults now (well, youngest is 17) and they've watched anything they want to watch on their laptops, for years.
We occasionally have people round and have a 'film night', but that is the only time we all watch the TV together.

anniehm · 06/10/2018 22:25

Rarely - I watch a few things with DH, thrillers, dramas etc. but on iPlayer normally, not organised enough to sit down at the right time. I watch bake off with my girls, but mostly we watch separately as we like different things, dh prefers to game, in fact we all do play games, but I don't do the online ones, too fast. As normal we are in three rooms (big houses are great, you can avoid each other!).

shutlingsloe · 06/10/2018 22:35

Yes, dc are 16 & 17, we watch lots of football together, Bake Off, Narcos, El Chapo etc. We usually have a serial we watch together but some weeks we don't get to watch an episode, just as and when.

ineedaholidaynow · 06/10/2018 22:38

DS(13) is just getting into slightly more grown up programmes, so we watch things like HIGNFY, QI, Mock the Week, Apprentice together.

We also watch quite a few cookery programmes together eg Masterchef, Bake Off.

He will watch some dramas with us, but we still vet some of them, so eg we don't think Killing Eve is suitable for him yet.

PS4 is connected to tv in lounge so that impacts when gaming can take place as all family wants have to be considered.

AnneOfCleavage · 06/10/2018 22:40

Yes. We try and have a family movie /tv night Friday or Saturday - this week both nights as all home. Have to choose something suitable for adults and young teens though. Netflix is great for series. DD14 for eg loves Friends.

We find things to watch together like Father Ted, Goldberg's, The Good Place, Stranger Things rec. We might watch the odd film together at the weekend. However, wouldn't think anything of it if we were all sat in different rooms watching different stuff.
