Toddler suddenly stopped drinking milk

My grandson (20) up until 2 days ago loved his milk in the morning and evening (from his bottle as he won't drink it from a cup). All of a sudden he's stopped drinking it. He just holds it in his mouth but won't drink. He's not ill and there's nothing wrong with his mouth. He's eating ok and drinking water. The milk wasn't off or anything and teats are fine (Cow's milk by the way). He is a fussy eater (sensory issues and being monitored for his different ways) so there aren't a lot of things we can get down him for calcium. He won't eat yoghurt or cereal anymore (hasn't done for a while), he's fussy about fruit and veg aswell. Does love cheese though. Any suggestions on why he has stopped and how else to make up for the calcium he won't be getting? We'll keep trying of course and are trying different cups.

Will he drink milkshake?

MiddlingMum · 06/10/2018 15:43

Neither of mine ever had milk past their first birthday. There's calcium in all sorts of foods, not just milk.

If he'll eat beans on toast with the margarine partly supplemented by tahini, he'll be fine. Three sources of calcium in one meal.

Mine refuse milk and butter. I give them peanut butter to fatten them up. They also love eggs and cheese so I think they're ok.

Careful of milkshakes/flavoured milk. The benefits of the calcium intake could be outweighed by the sugar content. Even if you whizz up a banana, it loses it's benefits when the blender has digested most of the fibre for you.

Milkshake may be an idea once in a while but my daughter tries to avoid too much sugar. I'm sure he'll be fine as he's now drinking loads of water instead. I guess he just suddenly decided he doesn't want milk anymore Confused

Maybe he’s realised he doesn’t like the taste?

My DS is 23 Months and won’t drink milk anymore. He also won’t drink water after he tried juice at a party!

Regarding calcium, a matchbox-sized piece of cheese is all he needs in a day.

TwoGinScentedTears · 07/10/2018 08:12

If he has a fairly well balanced diet, he'll be getting enough calcium especially if he will eat cheese.

I wouldn't push the milk thing. Offer it occasionally but don't make a big thing out of it, it'll become a power play and there will be no winners!

It's not something I would be concerned about. It's not really natural in the animal kingdom to drink milk from another species once past weaning.

My thoughts exactly. I don't get this obsession with children drinking milk. In fact, if you live in a hard water area, your child is likely to get enough calcium from that although it's worth getting your tap water professionally checked to make sure.

My ds did that. He was bf and then moved onto solid foods and cows milk for a year, then one day went from happily guzzling milk to water only.
He’s only drunk water since and seems perfectly happy. He loves cheese now but won’t touch cream or yoghurt or even Ice cream.

Maybugger · 07/10/2018 08:42

My ds refused all dairy from about 10 months and still remains so in his 30's.
So long as he has a good diet it won't harm him.

Calcium is found in dark leafy vegetables and almonds
