Could my DD have chicken pox with no other symptoms?

Morning all. At bedtime last night I noticed that DD (6) has a few red spots on her body - less than a dozen, I'd say. She seems otherwise absolutely fine in herself, no temperature and quite perky, and they don't seem to be itchy.

Gave her piriton last night which doesn't seem to have made any difference. Could she have chicken pox with no other symptoms?! There's been no cases of it at school that I know of, though of course she could be the first.

She's got a ballet class this morning and wants to go, but obviously I don't want her to infect anyone. Any thoughts??

Could well be. It’s often a very mild illness and hardly noticed by child.
It depends on the spots - are they forming little blisters?

There are lots of other causes too. Has she been near a dog that might have a flea? Have you walked anywhere where she might have a midge bite from?

It’s more likely that if it’s chicken pox that she’ll have grown a few more spots too.

Has she been vaccinated for chicken pox? DD was but was one of the unlucky few who caught it anyway. We got to 8 spots that never fully puffed up or scabbed and she was completely fine and not ill.

To be honest if it is only a few spots and she is fine it is probably just a rash. Sometimes piriton doesn't get rid of rashes that are a result of a weird reaction to laundry detergent or clothes or air pollution.

I think she would have more spots than last night if it were chicken pox. From memory, they seem to appear quite rapidly at the start.

My DD has woken this morning with chickenpox spots. She seems fine with it so far (although I don't know how I'll cope - she has a twin and I'm very confident that he'll get it too 😩).

I'm hoping it's a mild case but I think I remember from my older kids that they start to feel unwell a day or two after the spots appear.

I'm popping out to stock up on calpol, piriton and the modern equivalent of calamine lotion.

Good luck

Even if its not chicken pox, it could be something else think it would be sensible to miss today's lesson.

There could be pregnant mum's or someone else vulnerable around.

Chicken pox does usually appear in crops and you might expect to see another set of spots this morning, but sometimes it really does effect them mildly. This does not unfortunately been the next person to get it would be so lucky.

RapunzelsRealMom we had Virasoothe.

It was Great! Def steer clear of calamine as they now say its too drying and can make the spots take longer to heal.

Fair enough, sounds like it'd be a sensible precaution to stay at home today.

Spring and autumn are chicken pox season.

It's very likely she has it. Do the spots have blisters? Chances are she'll get more over the course of today or overnight.

Children usually feel ok for the first day or two but by day 3 will start to feel uncomfortable. Days 4 and 5 tend to be the worst.

Please don't take her out today. Maybe it's "just spots" and they'll be gone tomorrow and you'll be annoyed at having wasted a day, But that's better than infecting an entire ballet class and potentially someone pregnant or with underlying health issues.

Ah, x-post.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 06/10/2018 08:29

No blisters on the spots, btw.

It could be chicken pox. When I had it, I had 2 spots on my stomach for about 3 days. Then on day 4, I was covered in them!

Hopefully, she just has a very mild case.
