When should i worry about dd's hearing?

Dd (4 in 2 weeks time) had a cold last week but is now struggling to hear. She is asking for the tv to be quite loud and isn't able to hear unless she is looking directly at the person speaking.

When should i do something? I wqs wondering whether a phone consulation with practice nurse on monday would be okay or should i ask for them to see her? I have nonidea whether they can test hearing at the surgery or whether i should wait it ouf a bit longer.

I had 2 sets of grommets as a child so a
I'm.mindful of that too

Thanks

Ring the doctors and find out which clinic does hearing tests probably local hospital
Get an apppintment

Colds can affect hearing - try some olbas oil overnight in boiling water steaming her room

Works a treat short term

Be reassured, though, that grommets are unlikely. The NICE guidelines now favour temporary hearing aids for glue ear and they can be fitted fairly quickly to avoid any loss of learning due to temporary hearing loss.

Keep an eye on it, definitely. Nag at the GP if necessary. It is important.

My DD was the same just before she started school (she’s now 8). We went to the GP & were referred to local audiology clinic. She now has a hearing aid in one ear but her hearing is noticeably worse when she has a cold.
You might find your DD needs a hearing aid just for certain times of the year. That was suggested to us at one time as she only has hearing loss in one ear but when she has a cold the other ear is effected.
I think, given your DD’s age, it’s definitely worth pursuing as she will be leading key sounds at school & if she isn’t hearing them correctly, it could have a long term impact on her reading.
Having a hearing aid for mild hearing loss has not affected my DD in the least. You can now get hearts & unicorns & all sorts of colours on them!!

I keep getting this after colds recently.
And all my doctor told me to do was to hold my nose and blow to open some tubes up. Not sure if that will.help.your dd but it does help with pressure for ear pain if any.

Sorry! I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine! I meant learning not leading & the whole affect & effect difference is all too much for me tonight Grin

Thanks all, i will get her booked in with the GP and try some olbas in the meantime

I have difficulty sometimes after a particularly bad cold, my ears get badly blocked up requiring syringing at the GP’s! But they always recommend using olive oil or something like bicarbonate ear drops beforehand to soften the wax - so things like that could be worth a try to see if it helps your DD!

If it's only been two weeks, you're well off grommets, and they may not even want to refer her yet.

I think as a minimum they want two failed hearing tests in both ears before they'll look at grommets.

My DD is a 3.5 and recently had a burst eardrum after a cold. However she had no symptoms and did not complain of any pain, it was only picked up because I took her to the GP for a fever that wouldn't shift. If I hadn't it probably would have healed without my knowledge.

For the 6-8 weeks it's taken to heal, her hearing has been awful, however it's getting back to normal now, slowly but surely.

Definitely worth getting it checked out if you are concerned.
