How much do you spend on shopping?

lexi727 · 05/10/2018 19:27

I just seem to spend an absolute extortionate amount weekly. I have an 8 week old and a 2 year old who pretty much eats everything we eat.

How much do you spend a week? Where do you shop? How many in your family? How old are your kids?

We spend about £200 a week and there’s 4 of us (two dc aged 6 and 15). I just can’t do it under that without feeling like we’re not eating nice food. We do love our snacks and bits and bobs. Blush

theboxofdelights · 05/10/2018 20:23

£800, three of us, Ocado, Waitrose, Booths, butchers, includes about £100 of wine a month.

It could easily be less but DH eats three times the quantity of anything of an average man. For instance last Saturday I made bacon sandwiches for breakfast, one each for me and DD and two for him, he then made another one and had two pieces of toast and jam.

He exercises a lot and is very muscular but I have to say that I find it a bit gross. We are separating, I expect DD & I to eat like lords on £400 a month.

I’m vegan and literally fuck all. An expensive shop is £25 for a week

Family of 6 and spend between £140 and £175 a week. Name brand toiletries and cleaning products from pound shop, food from Lidl and Sainsbury's. Butchers once a month

blue25 · 05/10/2018 20:27

£60 a week. Can't imagine spending £200!!

LBOCS2 · 05/10/2018 22:02

We budget £400 a month, so just under £100 a week. We have a HelloFresh box which does us for three meals in the mid-week and the rest is out of that budget which I split between Aldi and Ocado.

There are 4.5 of us (shared custody of a teenager, plus a 6yo and a 2yo). It works out pretty much spot on.

Cobrider · 05/10/2018 22:05

About £200 a week but I know it’s otobsbly more with top ups. I really want to cut down but essentially love food too much and am pretty lazy.

MrsPear · 05/10/2018 22:14

2 adults 2 primary age children. Monthly budget is £400 - includes toiletries and cleaning stuff. Spent in wilkos, Iceland, Sainsbury’s and Aldi’s.

I will say what I always say on these threads. Stop. Grab partner - sorry I forgot if you mentioned one or not as tired apologies if not - and spend the evening in the kitchen. Pull out all food. Including fridge and freezer. Include the garage, under stairs and anywhere else you shove stuff. Write it all down. Chuck the out of date stuff. If you have time go through your toiletries too. Now meal plan based on what you have - I bet the list will be very small! Get your cupboards down. I have the equivalent of a tall wall cupboard. A small freezer and fridge. I could still feed us for a good week or more. Keep meal planning and it will be cheaper.

Finally look at your portion sizes. Eg for us I only use 250g of mince for cottage pie or chilli etc Joints equal 2meals plus stock if chicken.

Helpmemyhairisterrible · 05/10/2018 22:20

£25 a day easily. That's everything though. Kids same age as yours and still on formula/only wants jar mush (no2 is not getting jar mush ever).

A580Hojas · 05/10/2018 22:23

2 adults (who mainly work at home and therefore eat lunch at home) and 2 teens. £150ish per week including wine. Shop at Lidl, Sainsburys and Ocado.

Lollypop27 · 05/10/2018 22:35

Family of 5 (3 teenage boys) 2 dogs, toiletries and cleaning products for £500 a month. We do have a huge garden and we grow a lot of fruit and veg. The garage freezer is full of homegrown produce. I also cook most things from scratch including bread and I don’t buy any crisps, biscuits or sweets. Yogurt is homemade, homemade granola etc. If I worked I would not be able to do any of this so the food budget would go up.

I do a big shop in Aldi on payday. I stock up on the store cupboard basics and toilet roll, washing powder, shampoos and deodorants. I then shop at Ocado the rest of the month for our fresh goods.

InDubiousBattle · 05/10/2018 22:40

We usually hover around £100 a week, for me , dp, ds and dd (4 and 3)but having made a bit of an effort we've got that down to nearer £80 for at least two weeks a month. That includes all cleaning stuff, most toiletries, flowers and booze (including prosecco). We shop at Aldi and asda mainly but get some meat from the butcher and eggs and bread from our corner shop (best bread in the world). I cook from scratch and meal plan but we eat meat probably 4/5 nights a week, drink wine/other booze 2 nights a week and seem to get through a lot of fruit which does add to the costs. Meal planning is really key imo, before we had dc and money was less of an issue I hated the thought of planning what we would eat for a week but it does really help. Being realistic about what you will actually be prepared to cook and eat on a given night helps too.

gothefcktosleep · 05/10/2018 22:42

2 adults, 1 4 month old

£40-£50 per week

Asda

InDubiousBattle · 05/10/2018 22:45

Any chance you could share how you make your yogurt Lolly? I've seen recipes in River Cottage books but never dared make any! We get through lots as neither of my dc will drink milk.

Catsize · 05/10/2018 23:46

About £50 a week. Shocked at the £200 a week people. We are two adults and two primary age children.

Lollypop27 · 06/10/2018 07:10

@indubiousbattle I have an instant pot now so it’s done overnight in there. I used to do it overnight with a flask the river cottage way. Don’t go with the packages stuff - is it easio? By the time you’ve purchased the flavourings it makes it no cheaper. I freeze little jelly pots of stewed fruit to add to it and give it flavour.

tomhazard · 06/10/2018 07:14

We are two adults and two dc age 5 and 3.
We are low meat eaters but not vegetarians.
We spend £50-60 a week on the main food shop, and another £10 to top up fruit and milk. I shop in Sainsbury's.

I do a lot of batch cooking and we don't eat a lot of meat.

GMtoBe · 06/10/2018 07:25

Me, dh and 11 month old dd. We spend £65-85 at Asda. That includes most toiletries and cleaning products. We meal plan so don't really do top up shops but do go to aldi once every 6 weeks for nappies.

lostvoice · 06/10/2018 07:27

We 2 adults 1 and 8mo, (FF) spend between 35-50 a week, depending if we need to top up the cleaning/baby etc supplies at Tesco,

To help us budget we meal plan and also put our months budget on an e-card, and limit ourselves to only spending on that, if one week in 50, we try and make the next less so it's even over the month

DieAntword · 06/10/2018 07:28

We meal plan so don't really do top up shops but do go to aldi once every 6 weeks for nappies.

We meal plan but we still need to go get bread and bananas and things mid week and of course random crap like little bottles of fizzy pop and crisps somehow sneak into the basket when we do.

fairiedemon · 06/10/2018 07:29

2 adults, 2yo DS, £50 per week on Sainsburys (that includes all meals and cleaning products).
I cook everything from scratch and we don’t snack or drink booze.

DieAntword · 06/10/2018 07:33

I want so bad to be a person who doesn’t snack. Trying this no S diet but I only managed 3 days out of the 5 this week. Maybe next week I’ll manage all 5.

DinosApple · 06/10/2018 07:56

Around £80-100 per week, Tesco mostly, occasionally Aldi.

There's two adults and a 7 & 9 to. DH eats a lot as he has a very physical job.

Ellapaella · 06/10/2018 08:58

Our family: 2 adults, 3 children and a dog.
Usually around £150 a week at Sainsbury's or Tesco including all cleaning and household stuff, toiletries, wine (2 bottles) and dog food etc.
This has gone down from about £165 a week when youngest Dc was still wearing nappies.
I've tried doing the Aldi thing but can't always get everything I need in store so it annoys me if I then have to pop into siansburys anyway. Also as everything is so cheap I seem to pile stuff in my trolley that I wouldn't usually buy so it often ends up the same price.
