Would you live next to an electricity sub station?

Electricity sub station is 50ft from the house I’m interested in buying. Is it anything I need to worry about? Or is that only something that people used to worry about and the evidence is it is safe? More power from people’s wifi signal now etc. Will it affect us selling in the future-would it our you off as a future buyer?

I can hear electrical humming/buzzing when other people can’t, so I would avoid a house near a substation personally.

Unless it was an absolutely amazing dream house, then I might be a bit torn. We once looked at a spectacular Tudor mansion that was priced astonishingly low because it backed onto a sewage farm. I would totally have bought that house, if Dh hadn’t vetoed it. Grin

When my mother was diagnosed with cancer, her consultant asked her if she lived near a substation. There was a fairly large one at the bottom of the road. He said nothing had been proved, but it wouldn’t surprise him if a correlation was found in the future. Food for thought.

No. Thyroid and brain cancer.

Bugger, there's quite a big one at the end of my road, pylons and everything. It's probably about 50 foot away. I've never given it any thought at all

I would not personally.I also remember working with a guy who put an offer in on a house, only for the mortgage company after valuation survey to decline a mortgage on the property as it had electric pylons overhead cables that crossed overhead on the house. He ended up unable to proceed on that property due to unable to finance the cables did not bother him just the lender.

No never

cptartapp · 05/10/2018 20:26

I grew up next to one and the coincidentally our married home now is next to one. So probably spent most of my life in close proximity. Never hear any cracking or humming though. Not an issue.

fairiesandelves · 05/10/2018 20:36

Never no. Friends' children developed severe health problems they put down to one exactly like your photo.

When I met DH he lived in a house that had a massive substation at the bottom of the garden. There was a constant hum from the electricity and some days the noise just sent me insane.

I had our 1st DD living there, and was really worried about it. Our 2nd baby was stillborn at 26 weeks, and I always wondered if there was a link. We didn't have more children until moving, and the house was a bugger to sell - took nearly a year, most viewers didn't even come in once they got out the car and heard the noise. We were only saved by a local Uni being extended and our house got bought for student lets.

Thanks, I thought I was over reacting and it was really tiny and insignificant.

It would put me off buying a house if it was so close.

Mountainsided · 06/10/2018 17:14

Have decided to ask for a proper report. Either from the electricity company or a private company to come and do a survey, which the sellers should do anyway. Also going to buy a hand held reader, only around £25 and accurate so good to get I think.

Efields from your house wiring and whatever brick-like device you are using to get on mumsnet will be stronger.

But as being unable to assess risk rationally is not just an mn problem, think about resale. As the place is near a busy loud road I hope it is cheap.

gamerchick · 06/10/2018 17:41

No I wouldn't but just because of the hum. I can't even do the hum of the boiler when I've gone to bed. So no heating on in winter.

I can't even stand stuff left on standby. I can hear it Confused no idea how.

Mountainsided · 06/10/2018 17:48

Thanks, I figured the house would likely have a higher field but worried about resale. Another house 6doors down away from the sub station and further from the road went for less than this asking price so I’m hoping it’s been over valued.
