Would you buy this for an 8 year old?

Ds7 soon to be 8 has his heart set on a ride on car for Christmas and it's all he talks about, but I'm not quite convinced it's a good idea.
We live in a fairly decent sized flat so storage wouldn't be a problem, but there's nowhere really for him to drive it.
He's also quite tall (size 9-10 in clothes) so am unsure if there are any that would be appropriate for his size.

Please help

Would you buy this for an 8 year old?

At eight I would imagine this has a very limited life span...

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 05/10/2018 14:58

That's the other problem, he would only get a years ride out of it at the most.

Get him a voucher to drive/be a passenger in a real car instead. Various places do it from as young as 8.

I think those sorts of things are aimed at 2/3/4 year olds.

Or go-karting?

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 05/10/2018 15:02

That's a really good idea @redspottydress

I would be surprised if he managed to fit in. My 4 yo is quite big an struggles to get in some of those cars.

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 05/10/2018 15:03

I've said he can take a few friends go-karting for his birthday.

I'll try and talk him out of it, he's wanted one for a few years but we just never had the space for it.

Yes he’s too big. Take him to a Smyth’s and he can have a go, then have a go-karting party or something instead.

HollowTalk · 05/10/2018 15:08

My neighbour bought her son something like that, though he was younger than your son, I think. He rode it once or twice and she cursed the day she'd bought it! It's too big and too much hassle taking it out to the park.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 05/10/2018 15:09

This car is suitable for ages 3-7. So if your child is a big 8, there's no way he would fit

LondonLassInTheCountry · 05/10/2018 15:10

They maybe other types that are suitable for older kids. Have a google

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 05/10/2018 15:12

I know that one isn't suitable, I just grabbed it off of Google as an example.

How much would you need to spend?

A few years ago one of my goddaughters (11 or 12) wanted a doll for Christmas. It was much bigger than a barbie type doll, but had quite pre teen/teen outfits. Her mum decided she was too old for it and wouldn’t get enough out of it, so I bought it (her mum was fine with that). In the June she asked for more outfits for it (for her birthday). She had made some for it too. Then the Christmas. So she had at least a years worth of ‘play’ out of it AND she had a TOY she wanted and I think at that age it’s important to indulge these last requests for actual toys and not encourage them onto screens/clothes/makeup etc.

So if you can find one that he can fit in and it won’t break the bank, I’d get it.

Wagonwheelsandstrawberryjam · 05/10/2018 16:21

I'm not sure really, I've seen them priced between £80-£300 So probably mid range @£150-£200 is what I would spend.

I'm also quite sure I could sell it or pass it onto his younger cousins.
I'm going to have to do alot more googling.

I really really wouldn't. Even if you can get one large enough for him, it'll be one of those things you have to think about charging/getting batteries the day before, then lug it outside to play with, but you have to supervise so he doesn't drive into other cars and into the road, plus they're really not all that exciting after about five minutes. They go very slowly.

MadMaryBoddington · 05/10/2018 20:01

Dd’s friend has one. They are both eight. Dd loves to go round and play on it, but the friend never bothers with it because like a pp said, it’s actually really slow so quite boring.
