Shoes to wear with scrubs? NHS

Avocadonut · 04/10/2018 14:07

Starting a new position with the NHS next week. It's a clerical role but in a theatre setting at times so scrubs are standard uniform for me. I just have absolutely no idea what sort of shoes I'm supposed to wear? I've already rang my manager back twice with questions and didn't want to hassle him even more when he's on such a busy ward. Does anyone have any idea what's acceptable with the NHS standards?

Crocs? Clogs? Trainers? Someone useful will answer shortly! Can you email your manager? That’s probably best. Each trust is different.
Write down questions. Send them in one email. Better than ringing!

Crocs and clogs are what l see everyone wear!

DittoNut · 04/10/2018 14:20

Worked in hospital - most people wore Crocs with scrubs as they are easy to change in and out of. You may be required to change or cover your footwear if entering the theatre so theyre easy to swap in and out of.

Other than that ive seen many people with Skechers "go walk" trainers.

These unashamedly frumpy looking beasts are frequently worn by nurses/hcas/ward clerks across the nhs! They used to do a clog version that were my absolute favourites. If you’re possibly going to be doing a lot of walking around or chasing staff members around the theatre block then these will save your feet!

I wouldn’t buy anything like crocs, theatre clogs etc just yet as different trusts have different footwear policies with regards to footwear in general.

I wear skechers work range in theatre. They have a nice comfy slip resistant range www.skechers.com/en-gb/style/76536EC/work-relaxed-fit-sure-track/bbk

I worked in theatre for over 8 years and we wore these

They were ordered when you started post so check first if theyre provided before buying anything.

MargaretDribble · 04/10/2018 14:43

Orangesox just what I was going to suggest. Have seen loads of nurses wearing those.

Penguin0fMadagascar · 04/10/2018 14:44

Normal Crocs might be off limits due to the holes (although hopefully if you're in a clerical role stuff leaking into your shoes should be less of a problem!).

ClockworkNightingale · 04/10/2018 16:24

I have a pair of Crocs Mercy Work for theatres; they're black, closed-black and have no holes, so comply with most uniform policies.

If you're going into the actual theatres, you'll need shoes that have never been worn outside. Trust policies will vary beyond that. But to be honest, theatre staff seem to have a lot of leeway with their shoes--I've seen sneakers of all shades of the rainbows, every variety of clog, Crocs with holes, Crocs without holes, Crocs with little accessories stuck in the holes . . . Hmm

Trainers.

Nothing open toed or having your heel exposed.

CuppaSarah · 04/10/2018 16:55

Everyone wore crocs when I had my baby a few weeks ago. And had written names on with Sharpies. Their colourful crocs really cheered me up. So you must buy the most bright pair you can get Grin

NurseMum84 · 04/10/2018 16:57

I've always used Toffeln myself, unfortunately my hospital doesn't provide them for the staff anymore so i buy my own. The Toffeln eziklog (toffeln.shop/shop/ezi-klog) is what tends to be recommended for theatres as they are washable (and very comfy by the way). Just bought a pair recently and Toffeln gave me NHS discount code of NHS15 which gave me 15% off, also free delivery and returns. Happy days Grin.

scaredofthecity · 04/10/2018 17:01

Don't stress, every theatre I've worked in has had visitor shoes. As long as you've got your own socks you'll be able to borrow a pair until you work out what you need.

I wear trainers but most trusts will provide shoes if you need them. They're normally crocs style.

scaredofthecity · 04/10/2018 17:02

I'm Shock at the price of the toffeln. They're so uncomfortable. I thought they were really cheap!

MrsFionaCharming · 04/10/2018 18:19

I wear sketchers with mine outside theatres, and crocs when in theatres.

The sketchers are unbelievably comfortable, I’d definitely recommend. But wait until you have your staff ID to buy because they give quite a hefty NHS discount.

Alwaysatyke · 04/10/2018 18:43

I work in the nhs but in a non uniform role; likewise i occasionally have to wear scrubs in theatres. I have clogs which were bought for me by my department. I definitely wouldn't get anything before you start, even if you are expected to provide your own there'll be guidance on what's appropriate (e.g. wipe clean, anti static). There are usually communal clogs to borrow as well bit in my experience they're best avoided :)

HashTagLil · 04/10/2018 20:11

They should supply you with shoes.

I wear a combination of Toffeln clogs, Crocs or trainers depending on how tired my feet are.

Good luck in your new job, you'll love it!!

Don't buy bright colours if buying your own as they will probably state that they must be black, navy or white.

FaithInfinity · 04/10/2018 21:28

We have a box of spare shoes and we all get a pair of new shoes ordered when we arrive.
