What to buy someone who has had a prem baby?

Sil had her gorgeous boy on the 2nd at 34 weeks. He’s doing amazing and currently on light therapy. He was born 6lb15 and so beautiful. I’m not sure how long he will be in for.

What shall I get them? Not a massive budget.

But my mind is blank apart from sleepsuits?!

Personalised baby blanket with his name embroidered on it. If you google you’ll find ones for about £20 or under.

My ds was born at 35 weeks, 4-12!! We had to rebuy everything!! So I would suggest an outfit that fits properly!! And a frame thing that you peg a keepsake on, we have his hat and mitts on it! Looks great!

Some home cooked meals dropped round while she's at the hospital for her to come home to.

I bought my friends premmie some prem baby clothes.

MrsMotherHen · 04/10/2018 08:10

asda do a great range the early baby size is about 6lb so will fit lovely.

AllAtHome · 04/10/2018 08:15

Small clothes

Ask if sh has everything (sometimes things aren’t bought until the last minute and parents of prem babies get caught out)

Decent ready meals.

They’ll probably be in shock. If this is a difficult time, watch out around birthday anniversaries that she doesn’t mentally relive the difficulty of the birth and get depressed around these times

We had to be super good at hygiene around the prem baby- just go along with that and don’t get offended like some people do about being asked to wash hands - especially at this time of year when sickness bugs and colds are abound (I’m sure you won’t)

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 04/10/2018 08:18

If she already has lots of tiny babygros, I’d get her some really rich hand cream. The hand washing in PICU is endless and it really takes its toll. Someone gave me some l’Occitane stuff and it was amazing.

SnuggyBuggy · 04/10/2018 08:22

6lb15? That's more than me and I was overdue Grin

Some newborn size baby grows and vests should be ok. I second a blanket as it might be quite cold when they take him outside for the first time.

eurochick · 04/10/2018 08:37

That's an amazing weight. My 34 weeker was about half that size!

Just get whatever you would usually get for a newborn. Toys, clothes, etc. At that weight I doubt they will be in hospital for long so just treat like any other newborn.

The parents might appreciate some hand cream. The constant washing and alcohol gel in nicu really dries the skin.

Mummysharkdoodoodoo · 04/10/2018 08:44

Ok thank you! I’m going to get her a voucher for amazon or WHSmiths so she can get some books etc,
Some hand cream & chocolates and something for the baby.

He’s so beautiful. We live around 3 hours away so won’t be able to go up yet but hopefully soon! X

Fill their freezer with homemade meals. They will be spending a lot of time in NICU so coming home to a easy well cooked meal is a lifesaver.

She’s asked for a pram suit for baby, what size do I get?

OP posts:
FraterculaArctica · 04/10/2018 09:33

I'd get 0-3 given the season. Pram suits are hopeless on really little babies, so 0-3 will be most useful. Jojo polar fleece ones are excellent.

CountessVonBoobs · 04/10/2018 09:37

My standard new baby gift is a COOK delivery of meals you can stick straight from the freezer into the oven. Always gone over well.

InvisibleToEveryone · 04/10/2018 09:37

What about one of the star wrap suits??

Easy to get on and off.

Penguinsetpandas · 04/10/2018 09:40

I would also get 0-3 months as he's over 6lbs already.

Loulabelle25 · 04/10/2018 09:51

Even though he was premature, his weight isn’t partickuarly dinky. My 39 + 3 baby wasn’t much more at 7lb 2oz. If you’re going to buy clothes perhaps larger sizes for when he’s older. My little boy is 4 weeks and we have been, very generously, gifted heaps of clothes in size 0-3 months and I doubt he’ll wear most of it more than once and he’s got so much! My friend bought him a personalised photo blanket which you lay him on and photograph to track his age in weeks and months. It’s a really lovely gift and was about £20ish - I know as she’s sent me the link first to see if I’d like one.

AllAtHome · 04/10/2018 09:54

You can get prom suits without legs that are much easier (like sleeping bags, but warmer.

Weight is not the same as size - he could be heavy and big or heavy and tiny.

AllAtHome · 04/10/2018 09:55

Pram suits

fieryginger · 04/10/2018 09:58

If she's going to be in for weeks, a Costa card. If she's out soon, some smaller essentials. A little cardigan or sleepsuits.

Mummydearest12 · 04/10/2018 10:01

She will need layers for baby - my baby was prem and we needed lots of blankets, cardigans, mittens etc as she couldn’t regulate her temperature very well
