Lonely new mum

Hello, I have recently had a baby and this is my first baby. I’ve been feeling quite lonely and overwhelmed - is this normal? I don’t really have any friends, I outgrew them all over the past couple of years and I don’t have much family either, since my dad died last year everyone fell out and no longer speak, there’s no chance of any reconciliations.

What do new mums do to stop them feeling lonely and going insane, I’ve looked into joining a gym but I cannot afford any, money is really tight at the moment as most will probably understand !!

Any advice would be most appreciated Smile

Thank you

I joined POf and started chatting to people on there. Mostly looking for a girlfriend but also just for the chatting side of it too.

There's also Mumsnet.. lol

And if you have interests there is likely a forum or Reddit page for it.

There's also apps that arrange meetups in your area, tho I've not looked around me as yet.

You're not alone! Ive not long had my first baby and I have some days where i feel so lonely, even though i have family close. Ive started to go to some groups in local area but found I had to be the one to start up conversations with other mums. Its still early days but hoping i find friends through them. Have you looked into groups like chatter matters/stay and play?

Hi!

Having a baby is actually the perfect way to make new friends.

Join up for some groups. Rhyme time in your local library is good because you can just go along. Does your town have a children’s centre? These are great and there’s usually sensory time/ courses for new parents. Plus it’s free! You could also try baby swimming?

Don’t worry if you only have your baby in common. Also, don’t be afraid to start a conversation - how are are they etc. you will find you have a lot to talk about. Most Mums will be feeling the same as you.

Also, make sure you leave the house- even if it’s just for a quick walk or to go to the shops.

There is also an so called Mush that you can get Smile

Baby groups! Your local library and children's centre should have a few on. Lots of church halls have playgroups where I am too. I found them a little intimidating at first but stick it out for a couple or three sessions and I found you settle in.

Having a baby is a great opener for conversation too - 'what's their name, how old, how heavy etc'. Good luck op Smile

Don’t go to a gym, go to a baby group. They should be reasonably affordable if you have a YMCA scheme in your area, does your local library have Rhyme time? Just get out, start talking and suggest going for a coffee. It’s not easy but you just take the plunge and do your best. Congratulations by the way on your new baby.

Thank you everyone for your replies! I’m going to have a look into baby groups and sessions in my area, hopefully I’ll meet people in the same situation as me

Glad I’m not alone feeling like this!
