You're in charge of our education system for one day

You're in charge of our education system for one day -

And you can do whatever you want, but it's only one day so your changes will not be made permanently.

Will you create a day of sport, cooking, healthy eating and encourage our children to be healthy and happy?

Make it a literacy day? Quiet reading corners and a trip to the local library?

Would you send everybody home because there's too much stress around education?

You could also mix and match lessons to cover a few issues.

Controversially, you could also send all the students home and have an INSET day with the teachers and use your time to train them on a subject close to your heart like dyslexia, or other forms of SEN. Or even let them catch up on their admin and marking.

Create one Union only
Create one Exam Board only
Create good-quality non-GCSE provision for non-academics in Years 10 & 11
Abolish Assistant Head post and reduce class sizes by having them teach full-time
Invest in SEN specialist centres
Abolish uniform
Offer good quality free school meals to all
Remove ‘Independent’ schools’ “charity” tax status
Ensure adequate School Nurse provision is available
Remove SATS and targets, replace with current working grade only

I’d hold a day of understanding. Talking about differences and how we can help each other. Then have a creative day where children can self direct their learning for a day.

@gazillion - no permanent changes! Just a day where you can try and impart a bit of knowledge but no structural changes. And you are limited to only what people can really grasp in such a short time.

@StarShapedWindow - that's remarkably like what I would do Flowers

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 03/10/2018 13:22

Reception teacher here. I echo everything gazillion has said, particularly the current working grade.

I'd also raise the school starting age. I'm sure it's Denmark where children see the HV each year til they're 7 and the HV and Parents decide when the child is ready for school; if they're not, they stay in preschool a while longer.

Screaminginsidemeagain · 03/10/2018 13:29

If it’s only for one day then nothing as that’s pointless.

More permanent then everything that Gazillion said plus remove the pointless requirement for children to learn made up naming conventions for grammar.

dobbythedoggy · 03/10/2018 13:33

Have a parents' education day where parents are required to spend a day in their child's class and see what and how they are expected to learn and at what a fast pace education moves. The children could be sent to do something exciting and practical outside. For my dd she would want to wash cars as it was the highlight of her reception year.

Make Maths and English Functional skills the default qualification and give them equal status to GCSEs.

Maths and English GCSEs for those who show more aptitude.

Scrap compulsory Eng Lit exams.

Train all teachers properly in understanding autism, anxiety and school refusal.

Scrap SATs. Scrap league tables. Scrap OFSTED.

I could go on for hours but that will do for now Grin

PoliticalBiscuit · 03/10/2018 13:45

So many teachers here not reading the actual lesson plan Grin

I would LOVE to be able to go and sit in school for the day and observe.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 03/10/2018 13:56

Cancel Ofsted. But that would have to be permanent.

sarcasticllama · 03/10/2018 14:08

A day solely dedicated to music and dance.

MistyMeena · 03/10/2018 14:37

Oops, yes didn't read the question properly

I'd put on a play Grin

pumpkinnicelatte · 03/10/2018 14:54

Bake cakes, then play games that encourage teamwork and co-operation. But mostly just relax and have fun for a day,

dobbythedoggy · 03/10/2018 14:54

Would it be bending the rules to give unlimited funding for 24hour? Schools could stockpile resources and places to store them, pay for aditional staff or specialist teachers upfront as long as it wad done on that day. Book the next 15 years of residential trips for their intake.

I'd also love to hold an serris of votes for all those students who would have come of voting age between now and the next election to see what their veiws were. If they agreed with britex etc.

PoliticalBiscuit · 03/10/2018 17:34

Yes dobby that would be total cheating!

DunesOfSand · 03/10/2018 17:41

I would hand out school uniform to all children, in appropriate sizes, to last approx the next 18 months (longer if parents feel they can store it).
Then, in pairs, to mimic the teacher/TA ratio, each parent needs to do 30 mins of the teachers day.
