Help - I think I have a teeny tiny splinter of glass in my foot

I think I trod on a teeny bit of broken glass two days ago. It is now really tender on the soft bit of my foot kid of an inch below the toes in the middle. It is ok when not walking but very tender to put my full weight on it properly though I can walk ok with a weird gait. I have had three hot baths, used drawing out paste (Magnesium Sulphate) and had a squeeze and a poke. Trouble is I can't see where it would have gone in.

Sooooo, presumably I cannot rely on my body just to expel it? I really think it must be teeny tiny. What do I do? My GP has no appointments. A&E would be hours and hours presumably just to be sent for an X-ray? I have three kids and so many work commitments this week I cannot even begin to imagine how I could find time and childcare to sit in a&e.

Just wondering if anyone has any amazing bright ideas or lotions and potions that might help.

I had this - sympathies because it is bloody painful!
With mine, I applied savlon as much as possible in an attempt to keep off infection. And - sounds silly I know - but I used a paperclip (the looped part!) to gently press around the area and push the splinter up and out. You know those tools - comedone extractors? I thought it’d be a bit like that.

It took a day or two to work - but it did!

I used one of those plasters (for corns I think or verrucas). It drew out the splinter in a day or two.

I dug about in my foot with a needle (could hear the glass crunching 🤮) and got it out in about 10 mins. I propped a torch up to shine on my foot so I could see it properly (like in an operating theatre). Couldn’t have waited, it was too uncomfortable

Oh all good ideas I will try tonight. Part of the trouble is I can't see it properly. I know where it is tender but don't know if that is where it went in. There is also a cut a little way from the tender spot which may or may not be unrelated. aaaargh. If I could see it I would def have a dig.

Maybe try the calpol syringe tip. Not sure how it would work for glass but it works for ordinary splitters and might be easier when you can see/contort to do it other ways.

Oh it’s out thank goodness for that. I think the magnesium sulphate brought it to the surface because I had a teeny dig with a needle and saw something flint and wasn’t sure if bodily goo or glass so pressed m around it and out it popped. The relief!

My dad did this years ago when he smashed a plate and then stood on a tiny piece 😷 my mum got it out with tweezers.

Glad to hear you’re all sorted! The relief must be immense after walking around on it.

Glad you got it out OP! I managed to get a sliver of glass in my foot at the hospital when taking my first few steps after giving birth to DD1! I was naked and very gingerly stepped into the adjoining bathroom onto said sliver, ended up awkwardly half squatting/crouching over the toilet (as I was, ahem, still pouring post birth fluids from everywhere!) with two midwives digging around the sole of my foot with tweezers trying to get it out! Great memory! Grin

Ds cut his foot on glass at the beach, the ext day he was complaining it hurt and couldn’t put any weight on it so I took him to the local walk-in centre.

The X-ray showed a tiny piece of glass quite deeply embedded so they sent us to the local hospital. The Dr there decided that removing it would cause too much damage. They said the body would make a bubble around it and possibly work itself out.

as it was very painful we used a mixture of corn plasters and dressings to take the pressure off. It took a couple of weeks for the pain to go.

Spooners corner warning!
Then about 6 months later, DS complained his foot was hurting again, he had a very large and painful verruca in what I thought was the exact same place, as it had grown so quickly, we went to the GP who gave us some strong strength salicylic acid. After a few weeks the verruca started to look a bit “loose” like a plug in a sink. So I gently eased the verruca out, and as I did so I felt my tweezers “scrape” against something- then out came the glass along with the verruca!!! Shock Shock Shock

Prepare to be envious here Sporners:

Professionally ( as an NHS Podiatrist ) I have taken glass, thorns, fragments of metal, dog hair , human hair from peoples feet .

Usually when I 'feel' it with the scalpel or see something under the skin.

Animal hair sometimes gets a capsual of sepsis round it

Glass is hardest to spot , no idea what direction it goes in.
Little splinters and thorns are common.

Above I meant glint not flint.
