Buyers rights

I have sold an item recently that's worth a couple of grand and I'm just wondering what are the buyers rights on returning it? I want to spend the money but don't want them to come back in a few weeks and say they want their money back. Doubt they will but you never know.

I think buyers have 14 days with private sellers to return is that right or is it longer?

How was the sale arranged - did the buyer have an opportunity to satisfy themselves that the item they were buying matched your advert?

Under the Consumer Rights Act, a private seller is only obliged to provide goods “as described”.

So as long as the description has not been misleading, the buyer does not have the right to ask for their money back if they are unhappy with what they have bought or if there is a problem with the item.

So if you sold a "genuine designer handbag" and it turns out to be a fake, they have rights. If you sold a car and made no claims about how long it would last, and it breaks down 2 weeks later they have no rights.

Sorry meant to add -
It's different if you made the sale via ebay of course - check their terms and conditions but they give buyers more protection.

What was it, how did they pay and was it eBay, Gumtree?

Santaclarita · 03/10/2018 07:40

It is a trailer. I never advertised, they were advertising looking for one and I responded to them. They advertised their ad on FB.

They've viewed it twice and checked it all over. I was honest with everything about it, told them it's not been serviced as we haven't had it long enough to warrant that and I don't know of any service history.

Am I safe to spend it? Or should I wait?

Did they pay cash?

Santaclarita · 03/10/2018 19:30

They paid by bank transfer.

I think you can spend the money. I can't see any reasonable grounds for a claim against you.
