Any academics with disabilities out there?

I have recently gone back to school to do a Masters degree. Loving it, but running into a few things that make me uncomfortable regarding my disabilities.

What Twitter/ other online resources are good for navigating this stuff?

I am not disabled but I am an academic.

What sort of issues do you face? Are you physically disabled or do you have MH issues? Sorry to ask so bluntly but it's difficult to help without knowing more.

I am chronically ill with several autoimmune conditions.

No big issues - but several times, I've had a rather dismissive response, and I find this uncomfortable and jarring because my course is in the healthcare field.

Have you got someone at uni who helps with students who may need support.

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/10/2018 22:57

Yes, we do. They seem very nice. This isn't really their area, though.

Hmmm! I would expect our Disability Assist team to deal with that. Sensitively.

Have you got a pastoral tutor?

AbsentmindedWoman · 02/10/2018 23:05

I have a tutor who I think is for anything and everything Grin So yep should probably make an appointment with my tutor!

The thing is - I am loathe to come across as being nitpickingly critical of the university, but at the same time...I'm irritated by the casual, ableist and medically incorrect remarks. When it centres on a chronic illness I live with every day, it feels a bit shit.
