My secret addiction is watching "Escape to the Country" (UK) late at night on a Saturday evening (yes, my life is that dull!).
A particularly odd addiction as I live in Australia, the episodes are years & years old, and I have no intention of moving anywhere, but I love having a look inside the often very odd houses.
And I love rolling my eyes at the impossible demands of the hapless middle-aged buyers who invariably want to have a B&B, several large "reception" rooms, an enormous kitchen, several acres for horses, and five bedrooms for all the family visitors who won't come because the buyers will be living in the middle of nowhere.
Another trashy program we watch is ancient episodes of UK Bargain Hunt which just happens to be on when we're eating dinner. Another completely irrelevant program with deluded contestants buying pointless and ugly items from grim "antique" markets which they optimistically believe will make them a fortune. Every episode seems to be filmed in winter, and a few episodes were even filmed when it was snowing. The stall holders and other stall goers are all wearing padded jackets, gloves, boots, and hats; meanwhile the poor contestants are forced to freeze in their lightweight Bargain Hunt wind cheaters.
Then at the actual auction room which is filled with disinterested buyers, we get to watch the look of utter disappointment as the crest-fallen contestants realise their items are not going to make the small fortune they had hoped for.
It's a hoot, and our family's low brow telly watching secret.
