Snacks - savoury, salty & soft

Last year DH underwent some medical treatment that has left him with permanent issues with his mouth and throat. He has dry mouth and swallowing is often more difficult than it was pre-treatment due to scar tissue. His treatment also affected his taste buds and so for the last 18m food has held little joy and a lot of pain, discomfort and unpleasantness - in short: eating has become a chore.

Anyway - things have improved to an extent and he can now say he actually enjoys some foods again. In terms of taste; savoury foods are better than sweet, but most snacks which are suitable in terms of swallowing are sweet.

So - can anyone suggest any snacks which are savoury, preferably salty, and soft? He says he would love to snack on crisps/crackers/nuts like he used to, but it’s such an effort. He manages to snack on desserts etc if they are drowned in custard etc but he just wants to eat something savoury because then he actually might enjoy it, rather than just tolerate it.

Any ideas?

Does he like cheese?

gaggiagirl · 02/10/2018 21:20

French toast with ketchup soft enough?

Sushi with soy sauce?

HoraceWimpIsThisYourLife · 02/10/2018 21:22

Olives? You could cut them in half to prevent choking if he struggles swallowing

LoisLittsLover · 02/10/2018 21:22

Sonething like skips, quavers or prawn crackers which dissolve. Or toast/crosp breads dipped in soup

Dairymilkmuncher · 02/10/2018 21:22

I can't stand them but hot dog sausage too?

Noodles, love instant noodles for a salt hit!

Watsits and quavers and those baby crisps

BikeRunSki · 02/10/2018 21:22

Boursin type cheese? Maybe spread on soft bread.

Marmite and butter on soft bread

fruitpastille · 02/10/2018 21:23

Smoked salmon, savoury pancakes maybe with some butter, avocado, soft cheese, full fat natural Greek yogurt?

WeShouldBeFriends · 02/10/2018 21:23

Hummus and falafel?

Sunseed · 02/10/2018 21:23

Dips like hummus or taramasalata?

Loopytiles · 02/10/2018 21:23

Soft cheeses, eg mozzarella.
Avocado.
Melt-in mouth type pastry, eg cheese twists
Skips and other crisps that melt in mouth.

WeShouldBeFriends · 02/10/2018 21:23

Scrambled egg and avocado

dontticklethetoad · 02/10/2018 21:24

What about edamame beans like you get in waga's? Covered in garlic salt?

Tortilla wraps spread with some smooth peanut butter and I sprinkle of sea salt?

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2018 21:25

Nice bread with salty butter?

Grumpbum123 · 02/10/2018 21:25

Baked Camembert?

hugoagogo · 02/10/2018 21:25

Olives? I hate them, but they might work.
Pate or cream cheese ( maybe with chives) on blinis?
Chunks of frittata? Or would that not be soft enough?
He certainly has my sympathy Sad

MistyReturns · 02/10/2018 21:25

Cut soft tortilla wraps into little triangles and use to dip into olive tapenade, hummus, taramasalta, soft cheeses (you can add other flavours into them - sweet chilli sauce and cream cheese is fab). I've got a bacon jam which sounds vile, but lovely with cheese.

PurpleDaisies · 02/10/2018 21:26

Iceland mozzarella sticks are amazing.

CoffeeandChocolateplease · 02/10/2018 21:26

My Granny has lost most of her sense of taste but something she does enjoy are Wotsits, she says she can taste them fairly well - I guess they would be quite soft to eat as they're quite melty.

EduCated · 02/10/2018 21:26

Potato waffles? They are my weak spot, especially since I discovered you can just bung them in the toaster.

Boiled eggs? Um, cocktail sausages soft enough?

Mingusthebrave · 02/10/2018 21:27

Prawn cocktail skips
Tofu
Taramasalta
Basil and tomato sorbet
Melt in the mouth cheese straws
Longely farm amazing cottage cheese

TheChatsPyjamas · 02/10/2018 21:28

Sliced gherkins? Anchovies (the ones in oil like Little sardines).

Xiaoxiong · 02/10/2018 21:28

Cheese gougeres, you can buy a 30 pack frozen from Picard (on Ocado) and bake for 5 mins. Or make with choux pastry if you're good at that kind of thing.

Smoked salmon mousse rounds.

Devilled crab on rounds of cucumber.

EggysMom · 02/10/2018 21:28

I came on to say - smoked salmon It was the first thing that occurred to me. You could spread (!) it with boursin, roll it up like a swiss roll, and then slice it ...

Anything spread with marmite becomes incredibly salty tasty Grin
