She has to say a line in her assembly in Irish. The line is 'thank you God for our gifts'

Please could anyone translate and let me know how to pronounce it. TIA.

I think it would be

Go raibh maith agat Dia as ár bronntanais

Which pronounced would be

Guh rev m-a (short a sound) ag(as in bag)ut Dee-a os R b run tan ish

Munster Irish

I'll see if I can record what it's like and send it to you.

Isabeau1980 · 02/10/2018 20:38

Apparently according to DH that doesn't seem quite right. He did better in Irish at school than me so I'll defer to him. He'll give me an answer in a few minutes.

Rockbird · 02/10/2018 20:39

That's brilliant, thank you.

I think that's pretty good. A Dhia (yee-a) and ár mbronntanais (m rolls into the B)

Go n-eirí an t-ádh léi!

Isabeau1980 · 02/10/2018 20:47

Apparently it's

Go raibh maith agat a Dhia do bhur bronntanais

Isabeau1980 · 02/10/2018 20:48

So

Guh rev m-a (short a sound) ag(as in bag)ut a Yee-a duh voor b run tan ish

Rockbird · 02/10/2018 20:54

That's fab, thanks so much. Now she's just got to learn it Grin

You're welcome. That's Munster Irish as I mentioned, unfortunately I'm not great with Irish from other parts of the country.

mikado1 · 02/10/2018 21:23

Munster here too, I disagree with grma 'do'... I think as better.

mikado1 · 02/10/2018 21:27

Looked it up there and do ok alright. Once upon a time I was an Irish grammar nerd but it's gone now!!

villainousbroodmare · 02/10/2018 21:38

Errrm, that's a bit pidgin Irish...

This would be more correct:

A Dhia, gabhaimid buíochas leat as na suáilcí a bhronn tú orainn.

villainousbroodmare · 02/10/2018 21:51

Rockbird, if you send me an email, I can send you a voice note. PMd you.

Fascinating to see the dialects like this, where they're spelled out phonetically! Really highlights the difference. And must look boggling to anyone not from Ireland!

I'd say 'gurrah my agat' for example, but automatically get it it somebody says 'guh rev mah agat'.

I wouldn't say 'brun tan ish' but 'brun tannis'.

My mam would have said 'ta' to my 'taw' Grin She had Donegal Irish.

I grew up in Leinster with teachers from all over Ireland teaching us Irish, so have bits of dialects from everywhere and no idea what dialect belongs where.
