Why is a fiesta cheaper than a yaris and other assorted car questions.

I'm hopefully going to master driving and get a car soon. I've got two small kids and I'm looking at a Fiesta or a Yaris. Why are fiestas cheaper? What sort of age and mileage should I look for? Is 40,000 miles for a 2015 car a lot?

I think 10,000 miles in a year is still considered about average, although the actual figure has dropped recently and in the UK the actual figure is more like 8,000. So anything above 30,000 in car that’s 3 years old I would definitely consider higher than average mileage. I don’t have personal experience of the two cars but things like a 3 door versus a 5 door, the engine size and the fuel economy (is the Yaris a hybrid?) will also determine the price.

Good luck mastering driving!

Ooh useful info, thanks!

Very surprised a fiesta is cheaper as they are one of the more expensive small cars. Is there something special about the Yaris? Are you comparing like for like in terms of engine and trim level?

Toyotas just hold their value a bit better than Fords. I wouldn't say the Yaris is better, although it might be slightly more reliable. However both are good cars.

Personally I would get the Ford Focus over the fiesta. Slightly more expensive but safer in a crash than being in a teeny car.

NicoAndTheNiners · 02/10/2018 20:03

Toyotas are more than Fords because Toyota are seen as a better brand, better reliability.

I’ve had a Yaris in the past and was happy with it. I now have a Ford Focus and am very happy with it. Both cars have been reliable and cheap to run.

IMHO I would worry about mileage before age. I’ve found with cars it’s random bits which go through wear and tear which need replacing and cost money. So brake pads and discs, clutch, etc...all stuff which is worn via mileage not age. I might be wrong.

winewolfhowls · 02/10/2018 20:09

I would recommend a Honda jazz, never any trouble, cheap to run and very spacious for the size.

KindergartenKop · 02/10/2018 20:14

This is the thing, I don't know if I am comparing like with like!
Stupid question, how much do you pay in insurance on these types of cars?

OP posts:
Notmethistimehonest · 02/10/2018 20:17

The insurance depends on you more than the car in my experience. For a 1.5l fiesta we pay around £300 fully comp, for a comparable Corsa DS’s insurance is £1,100 (17 and passed his test 6 months ago).

It varies massively but you can do example quotes online without the ref number but comparing different cars.

Notmethistimehonest · 02/10/2018 20:18

Without the registration number that should read, not ref number.

Fiestas don’t hold their value as much - they’re the top selling car in the UK (or so I believe), so part of that will be down to the sheer number of them available second hand.

I’d go for mileage over age. A 4 year old car that’s done 75k miles has had a much rouge life than a 7 year old car on the same. I’d be put off by more than 10k yearly average.

We have a fiesta, I love it.

MinecraftHolmes · 02/10/2018 20:24

Insurance wise - we have fully comp on a 1l zetec S, DH is the main driver and me as a named driver (passed my test this year) - £34 a month.

MismatchedStripySocks · 02/10/2018 20:25

We’ve just changed our car but before that we had a Hyundai i20. Fab little car which I would highly recommend, especially for a first time driver.

PotteringAlong · 02/10/2018 20:25

I went to buy a fiesta but got a b-max which was cheaper still! It’s just a lifted up fiesta. Not very pretty but lovely to drive. And the slidey doors are my favourite thing ever

MorningsEleven · 02/10/2018 21:38

Fiestas are shite, the Yaris is a lovely wee car. DH had a Yaris and I used to steal his keys and go for a little joyride. Loved that car.

NicoAndTheNiners · 03/10/2018 07:08

If they do go wrong Fords are generally cheaper than toyotas for parts.

Meet0nTheIedge · 03/10/2018 07:15

Toyotas have a good reputation for reliability, we've had three now over a period of twenty years and nothing has ever gone wrong on any of them apart from the aircon packing up on one.

donajimena · 03/10/2018 07:16

Have you seen the Ford fiesta recall in the news? I'd definitely make sure any model you are interested in isn t affected.
I'd still buy one over a Toyota. I think Toyota are great but as a pp pointed out they cost noticeably more to repair.

MsFrosty · 03/10/2018 07:16

Toyota is seen as a better built, more reliable car than ford so holds there value better.
Personally I'd buy something from the skoda group or a Toyota over anything else due to build quality and reliability

Ameliarose16 · 03/10/2018 07:19

I've only had Yaris- I absolutely love them wouldn't have anything else (DH has merc and still prefer driving my Yaris)
