Headscarves

I grew up late 60's into 70's. I remember my mum having loads of pretty headscarves. Every woman I knew wore one. I think most women around my area would have gone to a salon for a shampoo and set on a regular basis so I can imagine keeping your hair nice in the wind was one consideration and a scarf, knotted under the chin, fitted the bill. But my question is, when did it cease to be a norm to wear one?

They are back! There was an article in the telegraph about them yesterday. Also princess Margaret wearing them in the . 70s

Back in the early 1990's our team won queens award for industry and us women got a navy headscarf

I would say mid eighties. I remember my DM wearing one when I was at primary school. I think only until I was around seven it eight though. She also had a clear plastic "rain hood"...

LibraryLurker · 02/10/2018 20:34

Oh I remember those plastic rain hoods. They folded down really small to keep in your handbag. :) I suppose it might be linked to the time period when women ceased having to wear hats in church either. Although I didn't go to church much as a child other than Brownie Church Parades and in those days the leaders did wear hats and we wore berets/bobble hats (the latter of which looked really stupid imo)

My grandma wore one well into the 90’s but tbh she had a fab Katherine Hepburn vibe and could get away with it, and by the early 1980s I think she’d stoppped wearing it in the HM the queen style (ie a large triangle tied under chin) and mainly wore them more folded/rollled and usually tied at the nape If the neck.

The details were very important Grin

I was thinking the other day while pushing the pushchair in the rain while ds, who should have been bloody walking, held my umbrella, that what you need is a plastic rain hood with a big, clear plastic visor to remove the need for an umbrella while Pushing, and also then the wind won’t blow your hood off.

Let’s start a campaign to bring them back! (We’ll need someone better than a cold, soaking wet, pissed off 35 year old on the school run for the advertising campaign though!)

the curler hiders are frumpy as , and the ultimate annoying garment - fussy and pointless. Too hot in summer and how will a bit of thin material keep you warm?

buy a coat with a decent hood - you wont get one made for women but we are now allowed to buy from the bloke side.

DeadZed · 03/10/2018 13:31

I don't think they are meant to keep you warm, more to keep your hairstyle in place.

UpstartCrow · 03/10/2018 13:33

You can get the plastic hoods on Ebay. I remember seeing them made out of waxed paper bread bags.

TheSpottedZebra · 03/10/2018 13:37

I should think they died out at the same time as having a weekly shampoo and set died out.
Now we wash and style our hair ourselves,at home, more frequently.

Jojoanna · 03/10/2018 13:40

My mum used to wear one she had lots of pretty ones , she was very stylish and used to slip it off when she got home and fluff her hair,,

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 03/10/2018 14:06

You need to read the "I am MORTIFIED" thread going just now OP - apparently thongs are the new headgear trend Grin

aloeveraowyadooin · 03/10/2018 14:06

The Queen wears them and she's the only person I'm aware who wears them now, unless Dot Cotton rocks them in Ireland.

Come to think of it, Prince Charles seems to be the only person who wears double breasted suit jackets - maybe their vintage clothes is a family thing?

FlorencesHunger · 03/10/2018 14:11

Would be nice if the head scarves came back in, I suit the look Grin, I remember my nana having the plastic head covering tied under the chin.
