Can't get the lid off a bleach bottle

You know, one of those childproof caps that have pads on the side that you have to squeeze in and twist cap. Have tried squeezing and twisting, really really squeezing, twisting, etc etc. Can't get the bugger off! Ideas?

Give it to a child. They'll have it off in a jiffy! Grin Have you squeezed it in, while pressing down and twisting at the same time? Some are really awkward!

Heuschrecke · 02/10/2018 16:36

Push it down first whilst squeezing it in and twisting!

Penguinsetpandas · 02/10/2018 16:40

I press both sides in where its indicated really hard, more towards bottom, push down and twist. I did wonder about a knife once though 😎

Heuschrecke · 02/10/2018 16:41

Use your Mount Of Venus to push down, whilst using your fingers to pinch in and twist!

I didn’t think that’s where the mount of Venus was Shock

Itsatravesty · 02/10/2018 16:43

Morrisons own brand is like this. You have to twist a little first then do the press and twist, worth a try. Jars are my bug bear, I end up stabbing them with a knife then the contents go off quicker Hmm

ShatnersBassoon · 02/10/2018 16:47

Twist it a bit first before squeezing. Sometimes you need to get round to the bit that allows squeezing.

ShatnersBassoon · 02/10/2018 16:48

Jars are my bug bear

Pop the vacuum by inserting and twisting a blunt knife between the underside of the lid and the jar.

Ironfloor269 · 02/10/2018 16:50

Yes, as @Shatner'sBassoon says, twist it a bit BEFORE squeezing the pads. Aldi bleach bottled have to be opened like that.

Heuschrecke · 02/10/2018 16:55

There may well be another one elsewhere on the body BOOP! But that was the diagram I'd found to describe that part of the hand!!

Heuschrecke · 02/10/2018 17:00

I guess you're thinking of this "mons pubis (pubic mound, also known simply as the mons, and known specifically in females as the mons Venus or mons veneris)"?

SealSong · 03/10/2018 21:54

Pushing down! I forgot the pushing down! Thanks everyone Smile

Re stuck jar lids - if you bash the jar hard on the worktop (hold it on the diagonal so that the metal lid makes contact with the worktop, not the glass jar), this pops the vacuum and you should be able to twist it off easily.

Tap the lid quite hard against the side of the kitchen worktop. Not enough to dent it massively but enough for a small mark, it releases the pressure but the lid is intact for sealing it back up again

Trumpton · 03/10/2018 22:18

If you can’t get the lid off a jar put some boiling water into a shallow bowl and invert the jar just into it . The metal lid will expand more than the glass and you will be able to twist the lid off easily .

AviatorShades · 03/10/2018 22:22

plastic-y bleach bottles etc. Boil water, run the boiled water over the cap and neck of bottle. It will then be soft enough to open easily using a cloth to hold it,natch.
Lids off glass jars. They are pinched in to create the seal. Invert the bottle and use a knife or, my preferred way, a long handled screwdriver inserted between the lid and jar to break the seal. You'll hear it pop as the seal is broken.

AviatorShades · 03/10/2018 22:24

(wish you could edit the posts)...as mentioned above, using boiling water is a good trick.

HawkeyeInConfusion · 03/10/2018 22:25

I find nutcrackers good for those types of lid. They squeeze in just the right place and give you the leverage to push and turn.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 03/10/2018 22:29

Try again but this time do it wearing rubber gloves it’s the only way I can open bleach bottles and jars, gives a lot of extra grip.

SealSong · 03/10/2018 22:47

Rubber gloves is a great idea

OP posts:
HoleyCoMoley · 03/10/2018 22:50

I use a rubber charity wristband to open jars and rubber gloves for bleach.

Weefox · 13/02/2025 10:56

Def rubber gloves do the trick
