What are the best fake meats?

I'm trying to eat less meat and possibly go vegetarian/vegan in the future. This isn't too much of a hardship at the moment as I love vegetables, and pulses, but there are a few dishes that I'd like to try including fake meat in rather than buy meat, even though I'm not planning on giving it entirely for a while.

I'm going to Waitrose tomorrow and I'd love any recommendations for fake meats. I'm particularly interested in substitutes for meatballs, bacon and mince, but I'm open to anything.

Thank you in advance.

The Vivera products are really good. The shwarma kebab is delicious in particular, but the pulled veggie and their veggie burgers are good too. Cauldron sausages are nice and the Linda McCartney veggie ‘meatballs’. I like quorn too, had the nuggets the other night and I honestly don’t think you can tell they aren’t meat!

Obviously @greendale17 has an issue with Quorn. The nuggets ARE better than meat ones and are just like McDonald's chicken nuggets!

And yes, apart from the chicken fillets (no idea why they aren't made the same as pieces or nuggets!), other Quorn products mostly taste the same, I'm a recent vegetarian so find it easy to compare.

Quorn fish fingers are vegan and I love them 🤗

Try soaking Quorn in a beef stock cube overnight. I know it won't be entirely meat-free but much less than using meat.

I really like vivera soya mince (got it at sainsbury)

Howmanysleepstilchristmas · 04/10/2018 13:42

I definitely recommend Linda McCartney mozzarella burgers- you can’t tell they aren’t meat. Maybe cut one or two up to use as meatballs?

Quorn 'best of British' sausages are IMHO by far the best veggie sausages, although a bit more expensive and only four to a packet.

Waitrose used to be pretty rubbish for veggie/vegan stuff but it's recently revamped their range and now do loads of yummy sounding things.

As a pp says, just be careful in case anyone in your family is sensitive to Quorn. Can cause digestive issues in some people!

When I first went veggie I used quern mince a lot in things like chilli and bolognaise (husband and step son didn't notice!), however I never quite liked it. I find nowadays I can make a much better chilli/bolognaise/cottage pie with green lentils and Bisto. I much prefer a good bean burger to a fake meat one.

Honeyroar · 04/10/2018 13:45

Quorn not quern!

I second the Quorn 'chicken' nuggets and the Linda McCartney rosemary and red onion sausages!

Thank you all for the sugestions. I appreciate them. I went to Waitrose and picked up a few things. I got Little Willies. Linda McCartney meatballs. Vivera Shawarma and Meat The Alternative mince, plus the grated Violife cheese.

I didn't want to buy too much at once as I still want to eat mainly vegetables and I have a lot of stuff in my freezer to be used up too, but I'm looking forward to trying them, and every time I'm in a supermarket I'll pick up a few more of the suggested items to try.
