Brace yourself, it’s thrilling: boilers

Just had British Gas out to quote for a new boiler and, although I knew they’d be expensive, you could have picked me up off the floor. £2700.

I’ll be getting some more quotes but good lord. Is that the kind of price I should be expecting?

Sorry for the exceedingly dull post but I’m new to the boiler-buying scene and have no idea 😁

Thanks in advance!

British gas are ridiculous.

That said, my boiler wasn't too much less.

It's a good quality one that should last.

You could post this in the property section.

But have you thought about some quotes from local plumbers?

LIZS · 02/10/2018 11:37

We've just paid bg similar. Has another out to quote but he went over the spec and did not think he could match it.

SpoonBlender · 02/10/2018 11:44

Yeah, that's about right. Boiler for a two-up, two-down will be something about £2k, fitting if complicated at all will be half that again. Ours took five days, but we were relocating it.

Thanks you two - I didn’t know there was a property section! Thanks SuperLoud I’ll take a look there. I’ve got a couple of local companies to ring but figured BG would be a good place to work down from.

Ughhhhhhhsomuchmoney!

I'd get some quotes from local tradesmen too .... that does sound a lot if you are on mains gas.

We replaced ours recently - very large 4 bed detached, and on bulk LPG not mains gas. That was around £3600 and that included removing the cold water storage tank from the loft, removing the hot water cylinder and changing a lot of pipework as we went from a gravity fed system to a Worcester combi boiler. It was a 2 day fit. The advantage in that outlay was that we are using at least 1/3 less gas, which at £800 a tank is a welcome bonus and the house is actually warm!

Thanks SpoonBlender too. The guy said the new one would fit in the same place. I was concerned it might need relocating but there’s nowhere else it can really go!

Check out BOXT. I saw an advert in Metro newspaper. You go on their website answer some basic questions and they quote on line. Our quote for Worcester boiler, Honeywell wireless thermostat and fitting etc was £1700. They have finance deals from £12 per month.

Boiler for a two-up, two-down will be something about £2k, fitting if complicated at all will be half that again

A 30kW boiler would be around £1K at cost, £1300 if you want a Worcester. If someone is telling you the boiler costs £2K, run a mile!

OP get some quotes from recommended local engineers (recommendations from friends, not dodgy online sites).
