Top tips for helping a stinking cold

Poor DD12 has yet another dreadful cold. October to around March seems to be the time - always the same pattern. She starts with a sore throat and headache, then relentless snot and coughing. She blows her nose constantly until it's raw and she always has approx three days off school.

She's had blood tests to rule out anything and all is normal - she just seems to be prone to these horrible, heavy colds.

So - any advice or bizarre tips, please, to ease the symptoms and get her feeling better more quickly? She's having vitamin C, paracetamol, cough syrup, lots to drink, Vaseline for her poor sore nose, etc etc.

Is it age 12 you can take sudafed from?
Also can she use the vicks squirt up the nose thing? It stops my nose from running for a few hours.

When pregnant I also tried menthol crystals in boiling water. You breathe the vapour in. You need ‘enough to take your head off’ to work according to my pharmacist.
I also found a humidifier aimed at my head unblocked my nose a bit in the night.

An antihistamine. Junior or actually at 12 just normal piriton.

Dries the snot up, helps them sleep and recover.

Saline nasal spray. It is far more soothing than any of the Vicks type sprays and you don't have to worry about it damaging your nose.

They used to sell stuff in health food shops called 'life drops'. Tasted like the devil's own work but it was basically hot chilli oil and mint oil. You dropped a few drops in hot water and drank it and it made your nose run. It was revolting, but it felt like it was doing something.
