Anyone want to give up sugar with Me?

I need to take action! My skin is itchy and my bowels are terrible. I feel foggy all the time too. I'm giving up sugar or at least cutting down 90 per cent. Anyone with me?

Don't make me go through this hell on my own

I've massively cut down over the last month or so - I was a fizzy drink addict. So now I have the zero versions and so far, so good. I've even lost a few pounds! Good luck!

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 10:53

Does it make you feel like crap the first couple of weeks?

I did it in January, still mostly sugar free now (except for things like birthday cakes, special occasions)
You can feel rough the first few days, especially if you’ve been eating lots of sugar. It’s easier if you go totally cold turkey rather than 90% though. After about 3-5 days you’ll be amazed how easy it is to just be indifferent to it. After a while, your tastes will change.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 14:06

ok so cold turkey means no biscuits, cakes 'chocolates, fizzy drinks anything else I need to avoid?

You could start by cutting out anything with sugar in the ingredients, (ie added sugar). It’s not just in sweet foods, things like cooking sauces, yogurts, ready meals, breakfast cereals etc.
I also find dried fruit (so things that pertain to be healthy like Naked bars etc) and tropical fruit like mango, pineapple, bananas and grapes also give me terrible sugar cravings.

You may find it easier if you cut down on other starchy carbohydrates like pasta, bread, rice etc as some people do find they increase their overall desire for sweets, but I know of other people who’ve managed fine and still eat these things.

One tip is to increase your fat intake, as it will help to curb your appetite, and also to add a little salt to your diet if you get headaches when you detox off the sugar.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 14:54

Is there anything I can eat?! lol. I was going to start with obvious sweet stuff then move onto bread etc in a little while.

Yes ... I've cut down massively, the only things I have with sugar now are home made gluten free fruit cake and half a teaspoon of sugar in a mug of tea. Sugar makes me feel awful .. bloated, gassy. I'm going to cut out the sugar in tea. I dont eat a lot of cake, bake one loaf cake a week and dd eats most of it, i have maybe 2 or 3 thin slices, but it's my treat ifkwim.

Birdsgottafly · 02/10/2018 15:48

I switched from processed sugar to fruit, whilst I was getting over my sweet tooth.

Sugar in Fruit doesn't count.

We should be eating around 150 grams of Carbohydrate a day and no more. Rice is the worst for turning into sugar.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 16:42

I suppose, like any change you make to your lifestyle, it depends how strictly you want to do it, and how quickly you want to see results; you need to weigh up if you actually can remove it entirely. There’s no point banning something that you actually really really love, if it will make you miserable without it.

When I gave up sugar, I gave up all
Sugar, all sweet tasting foods (even artificial sweeteners and fruit), because I was literally at rock bottom with my weight and it was making me so miserable that no matter what it took, I was going to lose weight. Not everyone has that to motivate them. If you just want to feel a bit more energetic or clean up your diet a bit, then there’s no need to fully ‘cold turkey’. There’s so much literature out there, plus I’ve watched loads of really interesting YouTube documentaries which have been really informative.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 18:57

What did you actually eat then??

Danceintherain2018 · 02/10/2018 18:58

I want to! Well really need to!

3in4years · 02/10/2018 19:18

Go on then

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 19:45

Do you mean me, furry? Typical day for me would be: coffee with milk x 2, then I usually have a brunch/early lunch of eggs, cheese, ham, mushrooms (or sometimes bacon, avocado, and cheese), or I’ll have a proper lunch of salad, cold meat, cheese etc. Dinners I have exactly what the family have except I have no pasta, rice, potato etc (so I’ll have curry with veg, bolognese with salad etc). I don’t really snack much but when I do it’s things like cherry tomatoes, nuts, slice of chorizo or ham, chicken etc. I do eat desserts- greek yogurt with berries and almonds, or cream and strawberries.

I run long distances so on those days I eat overnight porridge after my run, but otherwise no cereals.

The real key for me was to increase fats (as you’ll see above! More than 50% of my calories come from fat) as well as reducing sugar. It’s possible to reduce sugar without cutting out all the carbs though, it just depends on the person and what they want to achieve.

FurryAndObnoxious · 02/10/2018 20:32

God you people have will power

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/10/2018 20:41

Furry I know it’s a bit of a cliche, but the less refined sugar you eat, the less you want it. That’s why I don’t eat fruit as it just switches on my cravings. I find I need less willpower these days to have no sugar than I used to need at slimming world to stop when I’d had 15 syns of chocolate.

FurryAndObnoxious · 03/10/2018 15:50

ok I'm on day 2 and not feeling awful yet but eating omelettes, fish, veg and meat it's bland

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/10/2018 17:35

It’s probably just your body craving sugar, rather than that your food is bland. If it is bland, just add some seasoning, herbs, spices? Can you cook and do you enjoy cooking op? I use Pinterest and other apps to find low carb meals to try, but then I love cooking so it doesn’t feel like a chore.

Today I’ve had a fried egg with avocado and applewood smoked cheddar cheese, a pot of Greek yogurt, and tonight I’ve got a PTA meeting so I’m going to have a Young’s gastro fish thing from the freezer when I get home with mushy peas.

UmbrellaPlants · 03/10/2018 20:17

The I Quit Sugar book by Sarah Wilson (I think) is really good for info and motivation. It has recipes too

oatmilk4breakfast · 03/10/2018 20:19

I’m in. It actually gets easier over time (done it before) but starting is hard. so after eating 5 biscuits today, let’s do it!

FurryAndObnoxious · 03/10/2018 20:35

today I've had
cheese omelette
pork potatoes and carrots
chicken soup
strawberries
lots of water!!!

OP posts:
FurryAndObnoxious · 04/10/2018 12:39

Ok I don't feel awful yet but had a bit of diarrhoea. My joints are going less achy aswell which has been an issue so hopefully this is working

Dontfeellikeamillenial · 04/10/2018 13:01

A good thread that you would be good on is the low carb bootcamp. And there's also a thread with low carb recipes (which is basically low sugar) with about 1000 recipes on it. Loads of ideas. You won't be bored.

Tatiannatomasina · 04/10/2018 13:48

Three months with no sugar here. Its been better than I thought and I am 9kg down, however I found out I was prediabetic, so that was a huge incentive to get my act together. My favourite foods now include pork scratchings, cheese, olives, bacon, cauliflower cheese, creamed spinach, basically anything with cheese 😁

FurryAndObnoxious · 04/10/2018 17:00

I love cheese ! Thanks for the recipe tips! how often do people fall off the wagon?
