Worried about large blaze in nearby block of flats likely containing asbestos

There was a large blaze that ripped through the top floors of some flats in a local council block. It took about 4 hours to bring under control. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

It's likely the flats contained asbestos as they were built in the late 70s/early 80s I think.

How worried would you be about asbestos fibres being disturbed in the fire and 'landing' in nearby outdoor spaces (e.g. gardens), if the garden was about 75 metres away?

I'm very worried. But I have no idea if its reasonable to be worried.

Anyone?

I'm really worried about it

You’re not in an enclosed space with the asbestos. Your house hasn’t burnt down. I wouldn’t worry no.

Wouldn’t occur to me to be worried. It’s not an enclosed space

AlevelConfusion · 02/10/2018 09:28

Well I think I would stay indoors with all the windows shut.

JamminImJammin · 02/10/2018 10:38

Thanks for your responses. Its actually a children's centre nearby (well, about 75 m away) that I'm worried about.
I keep imagining also that when the fire happened (late evening), not all the windows in the childrens' centre would necessarily have been shut (e.g. one or two windows on the first floor might've been left ajar as this was in the height of summer).
I realise that I'm extremely fortunate that it wasn't my home that was burnt. Please don't think that just because I am worried about this, it means I don't also think about the poor people whose home was damaged.

As the fire has already happened - closing windows won’t really do much now.

Asbestos is airborne when disturbed then it will land. The best you can do is just keep your home clean and dusted. However asbestos is already naturally occurring anyway so you can’t avoid it.

I suspect the risk is now low. Do you generally worry about stuff?

LIZS · 02/10/2018 11:01

You are making many assumptions - that asbestos was present, disturbed, was wind blown towards the children's centre, that windows were left open and fibres present inside... Presumably there has since been a clean up in the area. Do you have anxiety typically? Are you the same poster concerned about a friend's renovation project?

JamminImJammin · 02/10/2018 11:27

Yes, I do worry about stuff. I have OCD so catastrophising and ruminative thinking are second nature to me. And sometimes (actually a lot of the time when I worry) I have no idea whether it's a reasonable worry or not so need some outside perspective.

I have no idea if there's been a clean up in the area.

And no, I'm not the poster who was worried about her friend's renovation. Although I did see that thread. I think I wouldn't have been worried in those circumstances because it was all dealt with in a controlled (and I assume professional) manner. It's the uncontrolled element of the dispersion of the (possible..in my mind, very likely) asbestos which has alarmed me.

Ok. Well I do worry about stuff as well - what helps me is talking to people in real life about it eg DH. Sometimes coming on line doesn’t help as you’ll always find people who might make the worry worse!

The law around absestos is pretty good so if there was a genuine concern, steps would have been taken.

JamminImJammin · 02/10/2018 11:45

@Believeitornot Thanks. I will mention it to DH. I just try and not bug the people in my life too much with my worries....I realise how annoying it can be!

I think I know the place you mean, and have used the children’s Center there. The staff are lovely and very proactive/knowledgeable and will definitely have thought about this.

Please try not to worry, unless the council or children’s centre tell you there is any risk Flowers
