Did you sterilize bottles at 9months?

Steriliser just broken and don't want to have to fork out for a new one. Today I boiled bottles in pan. Would you still sterilize?

If you're formula feeding you should sterilise them until you stop

gindrinkingmarypoppins · 01/10/2018 19:49

Yes if it's for formula. No if it's for water. As pp said, sterilise all bottles which you use for formula, for as long as you use it.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 01/10/2018 19:51

I did for pfb. Didn't for DS2 . Just stuck it all in the dishwasher. But I think the advice is to sterilize if it's formula.

BubblesBubblesBubbles · 01/10/2018 19:51

I didn’t with number 2! Our steriliser broke so I just shoved the bottles in the dishwasher, the rinsed with boiling water before making the bottles up. That or I used Pre made formula.

Probably not the best looking back.

seasidewitchtits · 01/10/2018 19:55

Get some Milton tablets and a big bowl of water, that's all you need right there.

Raines100 · 01/10/2018 19:58

Might be old advice now, but I was told to stop sterilizing at 6 months. It's a bit pointless once baby is crawling and putting everything in their mouth from cat biscuits to the 3-day-old apple slice under the sofa.
Alternatively, I was also told bottles come out sterile from the dishwasher (but wouldn't rely on that pre-6 months).

Bananacentral · 01/10/2018 20:01

Yes we’re going to continue until the NHS suggested 12 months (although DS is PFB).
We just use a bowl/pot and steriliser tablets (we use either Milton or tesco own brand which are 1/4 the price of Milton!) only needs changing every 24hrs.

Magpie1976 · 01/10/2018 20:02

Thanks. Looking like tablets are going to be the best option

I did until about 7 months-ish, just rinsed to remove any residue then did the hottest dishwasher cycle. Our paediatrician in the US was surprised we were still doing it and said there’s no need after 6 months. So we stopped.

brokenharbour · 01/10/2018 20:09

It's to do with bacteria growing in formula so yes. Nothing to do with baby putting fluff in it's mouth or whatever.

brokenharbour · 01/10/2018 20:10

*its

Ginmakesitallok · 01/10/2018 20:12

Sterilising bottles doesn't affect any bacteria in formula. Using hot water to make up formula kills the bacteria in the formula. No need to sterilise bottles at 9 months!

Luvly12 · 01/10/2018 20:13

No not a 9 months def not. Probably stopped around 7 or 8 months.

brokenharbour · 01/10/2018 21:03

But...the reason why you sterilise is because it's hard to get all the milk residue off the nooks and crannies in bottles and bacteria can grow in it the residue (much worse than whatever the baby can pick up off the floor.) That doesn't suddenly stop at six months!

brokenharbour · 01/10/2018 21:05

And of course the nhs advice is to sterilise til at least 12 months for this reason.

Rainatnight · 01/10/2018 21:22

Yep, sterilised till one year.
