There are lots of things that were common when I was at school, that would cause outrage if they happened today. For a start -

  • Teachers giving kids the belt from 5 years old
  • Dinner ladies in primary making you eat everything on your plate
  • Teachers in -primary making you drink your bottle of milk
  • Teachers in secondary throwing blackboard rubbers at kids heads

I remember the BBC computers too, and the Zx81 which our school bought loads of. I got one for Christmas too.

For lovers of 80s computing and, not least, Chuckie Egg - have a google for a certain computing museum v close to Cambridge. Current firm favourite of 2x 40 year olds and 1x 7 year old.

There seemed to be a period when children in Primary didn't have to wear uniform. My children's primary introduced one in about 1982, because the rival Junior School not only had a uniform, they had to wear ties! For some reason this was thought to improve the school. It didn't work. It was another 35 years before the roles were reversed in terms of popularity!

My junior school had no uniform. The high school uniform was very relaxed. Any navy skirt, any navy jumper or cardigan. The school now has a regulation kilt, jumper, blazer. Same shirt though. Many of my old school friends have kids at high school now and the uniform is a lot smarter than we wore. My infant school had an optional uniform of a wool blazer and tie or you could wear own clothes
