Plants that are happy in a north facing room.

Terraced house - the front of which is completley south facing. I want some house plants for the dining room which is a north facing room.
No French doors or anything to allow light to spill into the dining room although there us a very large window, it is a permanently shaded room.
Would spider plants, ferns and something else be happy to grow in a room like this?
I'm sketchy on the specifics of what is considered 'shady' regarding a room.
Any help is really appreciated.

I have a north facing room where a spider plant, a sedum 'burro's tail' and a cactus are all thriving. I have them right in the window so they are actually getting lots of light, just not direct sun onto them.

Christmas cactus might also be happy. Can you put them close by the window?

zz plant, yucca, spider plant, peace lily , ivy all do well. General tip is darker green leaves can tolerate lower light. Having said that I've got golden pothos in my bedroom which doesn't get much light and is doing well. Goid luck xx

Ooh lovely. Excellent suggestions, I'm off to Google.

They will be fairly close to the window but not in the set up that you have yours, Relentlesssylvia.
I've a few lamps around the room that are always on and we've decorated the room in warm fairly dark colours so it looks snug and cosy rather than drabby and gloomy but I fancy some greenery.
I think I'll look into different ivy varieties and have a few dotted around.

Never heard of zz plant. Is it pronounced zed zed plant or 'zzzzz' plant...?

Aspidistra isn’t called the cast iron plant for nothing. It will survive in the darkest spot.

Chrestomanciscat · 01/10/2018 18:28

Hi egg it's zamioculcas zamilifolia (Sp?) I think they are beautiful and they are nigh indestructible. There's a gorgeous black one 😍 swoon. it's lovely www.crocus.co.uk/plants/_/zamioculcas-zamiifolia-raven-dowton-pbr/classid.2000028845/

Can be expensive on crocus tho cx

Draceana marginta should do well if it's on/near the windowsill. There are a architectural type plant, are cheap, easy to look after and you can get them easily. Also sensevaria/ mother in laws tongue. Both of these are top performing air cleaners. I'm houseplant obsessed at the mo 🤔 cx

@SputnikBear
Do you know if aspidestras will survive central heating?

SputnikBear · 01/10/2018 21:23

My aspidistra is in a fairly dark room about 3ft from the radiator and is still alive.

DunkandEggAgain · 02/10/2018 08:13

This is really good. Nice amount of suggestions here.
I'm after air purifying plants. I've seen varieties of ivy which do this.
Any ideas on ferns though? They always look so bushy and healthy and vibrant, I really want one.

I've not had much success with maidenhair ferns. They look fab but turned brown over time.
Perhaps if you had ferns in a group and misted them regularly they would do well
Orchids don't need much sun, I see them in rooms with little direct light.
Thanks Sputnikbear I will get an aspidestra -I have the ideal spot.
I don't think garden centres too good for indoor plants, you could try online OP.

Chrestomanciscat · 02/10/2018 12:57

Some kind of Asparagus fern perhaps? £5 at wyevale gardens centres. Or Boston fern.
Devils ivy, English ivy?
Also in Aldi this morning 80 cm tall marginata, also a large zamioculcas and some large leafy thing, each £10. That is a bargain!! Check it out if can cx

I had peace lilies in a north-facing room (about 2m from the window) and they flourished for years.
