How many portions of fruit and veg do you really eat a day?

I know the goal is to eat at least 5, but I generally come in at about 3-4 pieces a day, which I don't think is too bad, but I wonder if I'm just being a bit slack compared to the average person.

So can I ask how many portions of fruit and / or veg you really eat a day on average?

If I don't concentrate 3.

The days I eat vegetarian ( maybe twice a week) I get the added portions of beans or chickpeas.

I eat lots of bits of salad on a sandwich but I don't kid myself that it is a portion.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/10/2018 13:38

The biggest improvement comes in going from zero to a few so I console myself with that.

Sometimes none, sometimes 12!

Most days I eat 5 or more but one is juice and one is pulses.

NorthEndGal · 01/10/2018 13:43

I have fruit in my muesli, plus I eat a 1 to 2lb salad almost every day at lunch.
Not joking, it has to go in a mixing bowl because it's so big!
I use a few types of leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini,
peppers, carrots, onions, olives, cheese, herbs, seeds and nuts, and and bits about.

Then a serving or two of veg with supper.

cloudtree · 01/10/2018 13:43

mostly 1

CakeNinja · 01/10/2018 13:46

3-4 on an average day, 10 on a really good day. That happens about twice a week 😂

Passthecake30 · 01/10/2018 13:47

On mon-Friday

Sultanas or mixed berries with my breakfast
Banana
Apple
Grapes
Salad (2-3 portions)?

Then dinner, maybe 1-3 portions.
So that's about 7-11 portions a day.

At the weekend it's slightly less fruit and more junk food Blush

For 16 mths I've been losing weight then maintaining that loss so every day I have 100g berries, salad, lots of vegetables and at least 10 pieces of fruit. So, between 18 and 25 I reckon!

PinkHeart5914 · 01/10/2018 13:48

Depends on my mood sometimes none, other days it can be loads. I don’t keep check on it

fatbottomgirl67 · 01/10/2018 13:49

Really good with veg 4-5 but not much of a fruit fan so 1 if I'm lucky

Givemeallyourcucumber · 01/10/2018 13:52

Probably about 10.
So far today I have had, banana, apple, rocket, tomatoes, radish, beetroot, pickled onion, spring onion, orange pepper and cucumber. And with dinner it will be, courgette, tomatoes, carrots, swede, onion, garlic and for pudding we are having fruit kebabs.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 01/10/2018 13:57

Oh and broccoli and peas. So probably over 10 a day

Seniorschoolmum · 01/10/2018 13:57

Today, banana for breakfast
Satsuma with morning coffee
Gnocchi with cherry tomatoes plus an apple for lunch.
Another banana about 3.30.
Supper is Cajun bean soup so celery, red pepper, onion, tinned Toms, butter beans.

And apple crumble if I get the snackies later

So 10 I think.

ClemClemFandango · 01/10/2018 13:58

Not enough, usually between 3-6 and one is always in the form of fruit juice.

Givemeallyourcucumber · 01/10/2018 13:58

What do you eat to only consume 3 portions?

Ohluckyme · 01/10/2018 13:59

4 today perhaps five if I eat an apple

Ohluckyme · 01/10/2018 14:01

Seniorschoolmum Sounds like you have a great diet - do you measure your veg portions to make sure you’re getting 10? For example 7 cherry tomatoes is one portion etc

Sgtmajormummy · 01/10/2018 14:01

I LOOOOVE vegetables (and fruit, but low-carb means I’m restricted in my choice) so much that I order a veg box from the growers every week. I buy small amounts from the supermarket at least 3x a week, frozen pre-prepared veg from the supermarket, too.

So I’d say between 4 and 6 major portions a day. Today has been
2 raw, grated Carrots.
12(?) Baby toms
2 Boiled Beetroot at lunch
And dinner will be:
Roasted fresh veg. so courgettes, aubergines, plum tomatoes, (potatoes for others). Leftover buttered spinach from yesterday.
Fresh tomatoes and onions in pizzaiola sauce.
Maybe lentils or chickpeas.
Defrosted Raspberries and yoghurt.

Does that count as 10? I’ve never looked into the portion size of “5 a Day” but I expect I’m on the high end of the survey.Grin

Crunchymum · 01/10/2018 14:04

At least 3. Often more, never usually less.

QueenOfMyWorld · 01/10/2018 14:04

InDubiousBattle · 01/10/2018 14:08

Giveme, well so far today I've had some peppermint tea and a yogurt with three strawberries (all that the kids left me!)so that's maybe half to a third of a portion for breakfast, then 3 poached eggs on toast for lunch. For tea I'm going to have homemade burgers and wedges. I'll put some salad in the burger so that might be another half a portion. I suppose I could make sweet potato wedges but that would probably only take me up to 2 or 3. Other days I will have more but I won't eat fruit or veg sticks (or whatever)purely to increase my daily portions.

OatsBeansBarley · 01/10/2018 14:08

Today I had a mini apple (satsuma size) with breakfast muesli - I'm assuming nuts and seeds aren't being counted . A small green salad, two tiny tomatoes with sardines and an oatcake for lunch. That only makes about 1 and a bit servings so far.

I'll have veg of some sort this evening. Now unless I snack on some fruit I'll come in about 3/4 portions. If I'd been out for lunch with my typical sandwich with a bit of salad only I reckon it would make 3 realistically.

MontalbanoFan · 01/10/2018 14:11

There was a thread on mumsnet a few months ago, possibly on weight loss, where posters made a huge effort to increase their intake of fruit and veg. I decided to join them and it’s made a big difference to my health and fitness.
I’ve tons more energy, my eyes are brighter and my gums no longer bleed when I clean my teeth. I’ve lost weight too - although that was never my main intention.
Because I live on my own, it’s been easy to shop for healthy stuff now I’ve set my mind on it. When you’ve got a family to feed though, different demands are made on you and it’s more difficult to be single-minded.

SoyDora · 01/10/2018 14:11

I’d say 5-6, but the advice is 8 a day now isn’t it? Or have I made that up?
