Relocating to Leeds

Hi all, I’m sure you had this conversation on here but I’m new to it and cannot find anything that is up to date.
I’m thinking of relocating to north Leeds next summer but need some advice on areas, schools and possible job opportunities in there. We have been to Leeds twice and planning to go more this year but knowing nobody there it’s hard to make a right choice, especially if it comes to choosing right place for a small family like us (me, my partner and our baby boy) and being able to find job at school, as I am a teacher.
I would be grateful for any help, advice or information.

I moved up in 2001 and love Leeds. I moved as a mature student, bought a massive and charming terrace in a slightly less salubrious area. It made me lots of money and I have since moved a couple of times (to less charming houses in slightly bether locations), built up my career, made amazing friends and had my little family. On mumsnet the only places to live seem to be Chapel Allerton, Roundhay or Horsforth. I live in none of the above but I am very happy. Where to live very much depends on your budget and job location. I am lucky in that we moved to an area which now has one of the few outstanding secondary schools in Leeds and my DC is very happy there. Good luck.

Beware that N Leeds can be very expensive. Obviously this is relative to where you are moving from, but N Leeds property prices often cause surprise on threads about relocating to Leeds.

PerfectlyImperfectx · 30/09/2018 23:20

Watching with interest as I posted a thread about this last week. Am also looking at moving to Leeds in the near future once I have sold my property.

TruelyTruelyScrumptious · 30/09/2018 23:27

Primary or secondary?- I am not sure across the whole subject range at secondary but there is a chronic shortage of teachers in Leeds and so it is very easy to get a job.

Ninusia · 01/10/2018 11:49

I'm early years so primary mainly.

Headingley seems like a nice area too, interesting houses. There's a particular road whose name I have forgotten but it's full of 1930s art Deco houses. They are unlike anything I have seen before. Just a few mins away from Woodhouse Lane. Maybe Grove Lane looking at the map?

Satsumaeater · 01/10/2018 12:01

Actually Leeds was a bit of a revelation for me although I prefer York, having spent a year living there.

I found Leeds the coldest place on earth (I was there in February)

It's quite hilly, too (which matters if you like running or cycling :) )

But definitely a very interesting place with a lot going for it.

romany4 · 01/10/2018 12:12

My ds2 lives in Headingley and goes to Leeds Uni. He absolutely loves it.
Nice area and easy access to town.

Defrack · 01/10/2018 12:24

I've posted a couple of threads on this if you want to check them out. Search my name and they come up.

Defrack · 01/10/2018 12:25

Family areas are north Leeds but very expensive in places, morley in South Leeds is nice.

Ninusia · 01/10/2018 17:51

Thank you all for your posts, I will look into more threads :) it's all very new to me, if it wasn't for the London house prices we wouldn't relocate but on the bright side, lovely countryside will be on our doorstep which is what we are looking for.
It's hard to move somewhere where you know nobody but it's all about new adventures Smile

Consider a BD postcode for better house prices- Apperley Bridge for example.
No longer in Leeds but lived Rodley/ Newlay area for years.

kierenthecommunity · 01/10/2018 18:21

I live in north Leeds. You need to be aware there is a primary school place shortage in certain parts of the area particularly in Roundhay, Moortown and some parts of Alwoodley

Is there a PM option on here? If so feel free to contact me Smile

MillieCats · 01/10/2018 20:30

I lived in Leeds for years but now in a BD postcode. I live in Saltaire and absolutely love it. Local primary is fab, it's a beautiful place, right on the edge of the moors but only 15 minutes on the train to Leeds. Great sense of community and there's always something happening. Bars/pubs and restaurants are good too. I wouldn't move back to Leeds now as the areas we like are far too expensive (Chapel Allerton/Horsforth/Meanwood).

bestegg · 01/10/2018 21:06

@satsumaeater it is grove lane that has the art deco houses, they run up grove road and alma road too.

MillieCats · 01/10/2018 21:11

I loooooove those houses so much!

Mildpanic · 01/10/2018 21:22

Lots of villages on outskirts of York are very commutable for Leeds. Agree Saltaire, BD postcodes also very nice. Horsforth etc very overpriced for Yorkshire tbh.
Lived all over so pm me you if want more detail.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 01/10/2018 21:37

Villages around York are just as expensive (if not more so) than north Leeds. Not that there is anything wrong with being near York - it's very nice around there.

What about your partner's job OP? Is that going to be in the city centre?

You've mentioned wanting better access to the countryside. Somewhere like Otley you'd pretty much be able to walk out of your door, and is very close access to the Dales. It also does depend on what sort of an area you'd like - bars/restaurants? stone terraces or mid-war semis? decent sized garden? transport links?

Ninusia · 01/10/2018 22:03

My partner's job would be office one so probably Leeds city centre. Ideally we would love to be somewhere with good transport links to Leeds as at the start we won't have a car:( if it comes to the house we are not too fussy, just a bit of a garden would be nice and two/ three bedrooms max. At the beginning we will rent anyway as it's u reasonable to move to a new place and buy straight awayWink

Defrack · 02/10/2018 08:11

Horsforth perhaps? Good community feel to it and decent trains in to Leeds.

Morley if looking for something cheaper

Ninusia · 02/10/2018 11:50

Our choice was between horsforth, pudsey, moortown and chapel allerton but we are open to suggestions:)
