How can you get Word on a MacBook?

Dd has got a MacBook recently and needs to put Word on it. I think you have to pay for this, is that right? Dd seems to think there is a monthly fee rather than a one-off.

Yes you can buy it. However open office is just as good and free.

You can buy Microsoft office which includes Word and Excel (the latter is also likely to be a school requirement) student version for about £60.

Another option is to use Apple's own version called Pages. The files can be opened in Word.

I think they do have Office 365 for MacBook now. I’ve never bothered and just use Pages - you can export a Pages document to Word if you need to email it to someone or save it as a Word file.

mimibunz · 30/09/2018 20:24

Open source software!

MayFayner · 30/09/2018 20:24

You can get it either on a monthly fee or a one off payment.

Dd definitely wants Word. Younger dd also has a MacBook and uses google docs but older dd wants word. Can you install it yourself or do you have to take it somewhere?

Install yourself

Pages is the macbook version of word and is just as good. Perhaps if she tries it out a few times she will be fine with pages. Otherwise I'm sure you can get it downloaded from app store or online

dangermouseisace · 01/10/2018 22:17

Pages can read word, and also you can convert pages documents to word. There is an option “export to word” or “export to PDF” so that anyone can read your documents...it creates a copy as a .docx or whatever it is or .pdf. I bought office when I got my Mac a few years ago, but it never worked very well (bought for uni work) and I just used “export to word” from pages and submitted my essays fine like that. Uni stipulated word.

Op, you need an office 365 subscription. I pay £60ish per year. It allows you to install office on upto 5 devices.

I have installed it on my sons macbook by googling - install office 365. Put in your office 365 username and password and you are done!

witchmountain · 01/10/2018 22:24

You can download it. A subscription to Office 365 is about £6 a month or £60 a year. You get all of the MS Office apps for that and you can install them on up to five machines. They didn’t used to be as good as the Windows versions but I now find them pretty much comparable.

I think the word processing packages are much of a muchness but I could never adapt to the Mac versions of the office suite, especially for Excel and PowerPoint.

Cross post!

Putting Word onto a Mac slows it down.

RaelImperialAerosolKid · 02/10/2018 06:42

Some schools and colleges allow access for free - try logging in with her school email address and password.

MongerTruffle · 02/10/2018 06:47

You can subscribe to Office 365 or buy Office 2016. The latter has a one-off fee.

somewhereovertherain · 02/10/2018 07:00

I’ll never understand buying a Mac and loading shit software that’s not designed for it. Why not just buy a PC

If she’s in sixth form, college or uni she should have an office 365 account via that email.
