Exercise recommendations to strengthen core?

PoptartPoptart · 30/09/2018 20:06

I have been told by my chiropractor that I need to do exercise to strengthen my core muscles.
I suffer with a bad back and have slipped discs on more than one occasion.
Apparently strengthening my core muscles will help.
Ideally I need to do these exercises 10 mins a day, but I have no idea what sort of thing to do. Sit ups? Planks?
Can anyone recommend anything or suggest an online workout?
Thanks.

Sit ups are one of the worst exercises you can do for your core. Pilates is fantastic. Though with a slipped disc you’d be better off with private lessons which I know is cost prohibitive. Planks can hurt your back if your form is incorrect.

You could try some basic Pilates core exercises but maybe have a one off 1-2-1 to get the instruction then continue at home?

Thanks Delatron.
I’ll look into it but I’ve a feeling a 1:1 Pilates session might be out of my budget atm.
Are there any good online Pilates exercises do you know?

I do pilates but when I first started physio got me doing bridges. The thing is with core exercises it's easy to use the wrong muscles so you need someone to sort your technique to make sure that you are working effectively. Still I aim for quality rather than quantity and my physio works with me to adapt exercises so that they are effective for me.

There used to be an excellent nhs back exercise video- possibly Pilates for bad backs. If you google it and hopefully it’s still available.

Yep, Pilates. Try to do a couple of classes with a decent instructor so your form is good though.

A physiotherapist local to me offers pilates classes. The groups are capped at 5, so although slightly more expensive than the local leisure centre they're no where near as expensive as 1:1 lessons and you get the attention you don't get with bigger groups.

A friend of mine was prescribed pilates on the NHS. She only had a limited amount of sessions but got to learn the basics so she could carry on at home.

@PoptartPoptart planks are excellent

You can get an NHS referal to see a physio. I got one and was given exercises to strengthen the deep core muscles (the superficial ones were in excellent form Hmm). Tbh they were very much so Pilates related.

Good idea to get a referral to a physio. The risk with online courses is that if your form is wrong you won’t be hitting those deep core muscles and at worst you could hurt your back even more.

Planks are only good if you have a decent level of core strength to begin with and have good form. I see a lot of bad planking!

I highly recommend the MuTu system online. I believe there's a flash sale for Oct 1st too.

Thanks all, some good ideas here

Pilates taught by a physio - best thing ever.

If you can afford it, if you can get 30-60 mins with a physio who teaches pilates and ask for just two or three exercises to do, that's a great starting point. If you get more than three I find you tend to bit do any of them properly.

Once you've got these nailed there are loads of pilates classes on YouTube etc but I suggest you want to get your core working a bit first with your 2-3 exercises before trying lots of things.

didireallysaythat · 30/09/2018 22:02

..tend to NOT do any of them...

(Maybe it's just me...)
