Who can I hire for this?

Basically I live in the house that Jack built ... or started to build then got distracted and never finished
There are a thousand little jobs in every single room and it is seriously getting me down now
I don’t know where to start
I don’t know what or who I need

Is there someone I can hire to just walk round the house and quote me for everything? And who? And what would I ask for?
I’ve searched for a handyman but they’re all things like changing bulbs and putting up shelves, my jobs are a bit more skilled than that

I can’t cope being in the house anymore it’s driving me mad

Depending on what the jobs are I’d look for a general builder who can do electrics, plumbing etc too. What are the jobs?

FuckyDuzz · 30/09/2018 17:33

Oh there’s far too many to list! A few are - parts of the kitchen aren’t connected to electrics, door frames missing, plug sockets need moving, holes in ceilings, skirting boards & coving missing, plastering, sink doesn’t work, shower leaks into kitchen...x10,000

Could you give us some examples of what the jobs are?

Going through this at the moment, we have a plumber, electrician, decorator and joiner that all know each other so are organising amongst themselves who needs to do what, get a electrician out for the electrics (or a plumber out for the shower) and ask them for trademen recommendations for the other stuff, they will often know other who they work with on jobs.
But it won’t just be one person if it’s electrics, plumbing and decorating you need.

SlipperyLizard · 30/09/2018 17:43

My DH is a handyman and is a whole lot more skilled than just putting up shelves, so worth asking one if they can help.

For electrical jobs you’ll need/want a qualified electrician, so chances are you need more than one person/trade.

We've got a local FB page and people often post asking for handymen to come and do a days/weeks work. I've done it and had loads of recommendations from people who have used these men and can verify their work.

sliceofcheese · 30/09/2018 19:20

I'd put a message on your local fb page for recommendations. That's a great way to narrow the field. Often these people will then come and tell you what they can do. My gut instinct is you need a good builder who has connections to people who can do the other stuff.

The trouble about asking for recommendations is that you tend to hear from people who have capacity, so are probably either starting out, or not brilliant. After years of struggling with this question, I have found some people who provide a range of services and have the connections required to bring in others as required.

Well worth the slightly higher cost. They do occasionally advertise on local FB pages, mainly to showcase completed projects. We originally had a task list which they worked through, then agreed a daily rate for a monthly, then quarterly visit.

FuckyDuzz · 30/09/2018 19:58

Yes this is what I need, kind of a ‘project manager’ to say ‘ok we can’t do x until we’ve done y so we need this person first then that person...’ and someone who kind of has a team of people to call on and to organise

Do we think a company that does extensions and renovations would do this or not? As it’s essentially cleaning up other people’s messes and I don’t know if anyone would want to do that 🤔

Maybe I just need Nick Knowles 🙈

Try asking friends/colleagues for general builder recommendations? The builder we use brings in his preferred other tradespeople (or gives us their details to book!) so electrician/gas engineer/plasterer etc, and does most other stuff himself. We tend to batch jobs together so they're 1 or 2 days' labour, and then save up for the next batch.

Readers Digest DIY book means I can tackle some stuff myself now: small areas of tiling, hanging wallpaper, putting up shelves or curtain poles. Empowering Grin
