Is this normal from a buyer on eBay?

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 14:40

I don't use eBay very often although have had an account for a decade or more

So today I've listed a bottle of perfume. It's £90 for 100ml. There's 90% left, it's only a month or so old and I've said all this in my listing complete with pics. I'm having a massive clear out of perfumes so I've sold this as a buy it now for a really good price

It went quickly. I have just received a message from the buyer saying ' hope it's genuine. So many fakes on eBay. I have bought a dip test kit and I'll test it on arrival as I don't want to waste anyone's time in returning it'

Err is this normal? I'm now concerned they'll receive it, say it's fake and I know full well that eBay always fall on the side of the buyer - so I've got visions of basically gifting someone a bottle of perfume if they decide to says it's fake. They've paid by the way

Is this a normal exchange?

PS goes without saying, it's genuine!! I do not have proof of purchase as it was a gift although I was with my mum when she bought it me!

I would cancel the sale of you can.

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 14:43

Would you? They've got over 3000 reviews (do you call them reviews?! You can tell how long it's been since I've used eBay!)

And what the hell is a dip test kit?!

I honestly can see them saying ' ooh wasn't genuine' and opening a case against me and I'd actually combust in rage I think. I feel nervous that I'm going to be scammed

I would also cancel. No matter what test kit she thinks she has it will not prove anything. I would email her and tell her this.

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 14:47

Can I cancel even though they've paid? Obviously I'd just refund them I take it?

And what would I say? ' I'm worried you're about to scam me? ' Grin

I'd cancel and say I dropped the bottle when I was packaging it. They could have messaged you before buying it if they wanted to ask if it was genuine.

PattiStanger · 30/09/2018 14:50

I'd cancel, they might ask for a refund and send you back a dodgy bottle.

Is there really such a thing as a test for a specific perfume, sounds a try on to me

Skarlet2018 · 30/09/2018 14:50

A quick Google suggests there are no such dip tests available. They are lying and are telling you they intend to scam you. I think it's fairly easy to cancel, I wouldn't even speak to them, just cancel it, it broke or something.

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 14:51

Yes I've never heard of a dip test kit. Is her/him saying that supposed to scare me? Or what?

I just feel I'll send it all off tomorrow and then just be waiting to be told 'soooo sorry it was a fake!'

This buyer sounds like trouble.

Skarlet2018 · 30/09/2018 14:53

EBay is full of these chancers. I sold about ten things a while ago and at least three people tried it on.

Racecardriver · 30/09/2018 14:54

I would cancel the sale. I would also flag the buyer with ebay. Dip stick tests aren't a thing. They are definitely trying to scam you.

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 15:04

I've cancelled it and chosen the option 'damaged etc'

I went to type a message to the buyer but decided against it. If they message me then I'll respond and tell them exactly why I've cancelled. At least their money is pending on the way back to them which is something

I just don't need the hassle of what I suspect was about to happen

No don't sell it. I hate these buyers who message aggressively. I was selling a pram chassis. The seat though perfectly usable had a slight crack next to the clips. A potential buyer messaged me and asked if I was selling the seat separately and I said no and the reason why. They asked for photos so emailed them some. They said they would take it as they could see it didn't affect the function or safety of the pram. I said they could have it anyway. Rather than being thankful for the bargain pram they had and that they wouldn't need to fork out for the seat/pram body they asked me to reduce the price to reflect the damage to the pram. Hmm
I told them to do one. I relisted the whole thing with pram seat included and extensive photos of the crack. It sold for twice what I was going to sell the chassis for.
Shot themselves in the foot.

Thanks @Skarlet2018 I used your link to work out how to do it!

Also be aware Royal Mail will not post any perfume not in original sealed packaging, as I found out when I sold perfume on eBay Confused

DaisyDreaming · 30/09/2018 15:27

She sounds trouble. My friend sold a scooter which left her house in perfect condition, the buyer seemed to change her mind, invent a problem and it ended up costing my friend over £40 in fees and postage (at one point eBay bilked twice so she was over £70 out of picket)

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 15:32

These stories just make me nervous so I think I'll have an eBay selling re think.

God all you want to do is sell some nice bits and pieces and it just becomes a pain

I ordered a bottle of chanel from eBay. Turned put to be fake do I understand their concern. I emailed the person and explained. I also pitched a bottle of genuine chanel from the shops and took pics as proof to send them. I didn't have to go through eBay they sent me a refund and I sent them the perfume back.
I didn't know you could get testing kits for perfume!
Cancel the same if you thing it's a scam or a bit dodgy.

DaisyDreaming · 30/09/2018 15:34

I’ve taken to Facebook selling, no fees and as people turn up (or annoyingly sometimes don’t) then you have a transaction on your doorstep and they see the item so harder to rip each other off

greyspottedgoose · 30/09/2018 15:48

What on earth would they be dipping to test for? 😂 what's in fake perfume that isn't in the real stuff haha

chooooo · 30/09/2018 16:02

Well done for cancelling. Fucking chancer she was. I hate eBay for this exact reason; genuine, honest sellers are vulnerable and powerless.

MintyJones · 30/09/2018 16:03

I honestly don't know? Err alcohol content? I have absolutely no idea.

My DH thinks that by cancelling the sale I look 'guilty' 😂 I'd rather look guilty than have the buyer message me telling me it's fake when of course it isn't.

I think I'll try some Facebook selling - my local group is a bit rubbish though really. I dont want the aggro if eBay selling though - and this buyer was kind enough to tip me off that she intends to scam me

OP posts:
MintyJones · 30/09/2018 16:06

@chooooo that's it exactly. I would feel very powerless if I'd carefully packed up this perfume and sent it off tomorrow. I'd just be say here waiting to be told that the dip test kit showed it to be fake.

The buyer said they used it a lot and it was 'the best thing they ever bought.'

Honestly, just don't buy on eBay if you're at all concerned. I've actually had my eBay account 16 years now I've gone and looked and all positive ratings, not that I use it very often at all. I've got maybe 70 odd ratings.
