Can you become 'allergic' to wine?

Last night I got together with a few friends for a catch up.

I probably had one glass of fizz and a few glasses of white wine. I don't drink at home during the week so I did have too much to drink last night but I feel absolutely horrendous today.

I never used to throw up if I has a hangover but I'm starting to now, which is awful as I hate being sick.

I have a relatively good social life and I'm often out a couple of times a month and love a glass of wine but even if I have a couple I've started to notice it's affecting my sleep so I'm shattered in the morning.

In in my mid forties so that's probably not helping but in the last couple of months I dont seem to be able to tolerate wine at all.

I of course I can switch to another drink and it's not such a big part of my life that I'll be distraught if I can't drink wine ever again but I do seem to react to it badly now.

I recently had to give up my beloved Rosé as I was having almost panic attacks the next day, but I had only been drinking maximum 3/4 glasses. I've now switched to white and feel much better but I'm now terrified to go past 3 glasses. I don't think I ever will now. It's good for me I suppose Grin

I used to live white wine but can't drink it now. I go bright red off just one glass and get palpitations.

Biologifemini · 29/09/2018 15:35

Are you allergic or intolerant to egg? White wine is clarified with albumin so egg allergy sufferers cannot drink it.

The sulfites in wine are usually also a problem.
I have a friend who makes wine and he said a shit tonne is put in most of them as a preservative.

PhilomenaButterfly · 29/09/2018 15:38

Yes, I know 2 people allergic to alcohol, and allergies can develop at any age, I developed hayfever at 23.

MyAuntyBadger · 29/09/2018 15:45

My friend developed an intolerance to wine in her early forties, after half a glass she'd immediately develop the symptoms of a really bad hangover and phone for a taxi. She's absolutely fine with spirits or cider, so it's not the alcohol.

Sallycinnamum · 29/09/2018 15:54

I think it's the prosecco tbh but I can't do another day like this again. I feel a tad better but I've got nothing done today.

I'm going to switch to spirits and see if that helps.

You can get these drops to put in wine to stop a lot of these symptoms

Yes, I think something similar happens to a lot of women. I used to drink gallons of the stuff; today I can drink a single glass of red but white - even a small glass - gives me terrible sinusitis. Tbh since my mid-40s (due to age and/or quitting smoking) more than a small amount of alcohol makes me sleepy and gives me palpitations and terrible panicky/paranoid hangovers.

oldbirdy · 29/09/2018 16:12

Prosecco is evil stuff. Gives me a dreadful dreadful hangover. Try an aged European white instead. I tolerate those far better (can have half a bottle).

JasperCopeland · 29/09/2018 16:31

I think it's a menopause\pre menopause thing. My friends and I have switched to gin.

Bufferingkisses · 29/09/2018 16:38

This happened to my mum and seems increasingly likely it's happening to me. Both at the peri menopause stage.

My mum found an amasing filter that takes out a lot of tannins/sulphites which means she can happily have a glass with dinner. I've switched to gin Grin

It's a shame those drops aren't available in the U.K. I'd give them a go if I could get hold of some.

I'm male, 58, and gave up alcohol about 6-7 years ago. One glass gave me massive rage the following day, the whole bottle would make my heart pound for a week. Beer is okay, but the flatulence isn't. Good single malt calms the spirit, but burns the stomach. Rum: instant migraine with vomiting.

The only exception is Old World red, at least £20+ so there's no sulphur. Amarone, mmm.

BG2015 · 29/09/2018 18:49

I'm 49 and had two glasses of Prosecco last night and I woke in the night feeling sick. I've felt rough all day.

Last weekend I drank white wine and felt awful too. I just thought it was the alcohol and my age, didn't think about the sulphites.

I think I'm going to have to start drinking spirits. I only have a couple of drinks over the weekend so it's not like I'm on a total bender all weekend.

I'm gutted as I love a glass of wine in a beautiful wine glass but feeling shocking just isn't worth it.

sweetkitty · 29/09/2018 18:50

I had a glass and a half of prosecco last week had a migraine the next day in bed all day. Not the first time.

As much as I love white wine I have to admit defeat and stick to spirits from now on

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/09/2018 18:51

I can't touch wine, last time I drank it was like 6years ago and I swear I was ill for a week.
I'm 40 now and the only thing I can drink is lager, anything else kills me.

PawneeParksDept · 29/09/2018 18:54

I know someone who is allergic to wine so yes, it's a thing

laceygo · 29/09/2018 19:02

Wow... so glad it's not just me , used to drink lots of wine no problem , would get merry and have a nice natter... these days after the same amount I end up talking absolutely shite, start getting argumentative and then get the depressed doomed feeling the next day ... utter pants cos I bloody love the stuff Sad

laceygo · 29/09/2018 19:03

And yep mid forties here Confused

citiesofbismuth · 29/09/2018 19:04

I can't drink ordinary wine, but I've found that organic wine is okay for me. If I drink ordinary wine it makes me very hot and itchy.

LassWiADelicateAir · 29/09/2018 19:07

Yes. Absolutely. A friend of mine became allergic to wine in her mid 50s. It causes terrible migraines which she had never suffered from before.

UncomfortableBadger · 29/09/2018 19:51

I’m so glad it’s not just me!

Have always enjoyed a few glasses a week, usually white wine, but in the last few months I’ve had a couple of strange reactions.

Had two medium sized glasses of 11% white wine just the other day and woke up at 5am with a pounding headache & rumbling tummy - I was then sick several times. My DP and friend had eaten the same food as me and were fine so it can’t have been food poisoning Confused

Can quite happily put away multiple glasses of fizz or numerous G&Ts but wine has started proving tricky

larry55 · 29/09/2018 20:52

I delveloped an allergy to red wine in my late 40's. I would react after one mouthful and would go red and my neck would itch - the allergy gradually spread to all alcohol. I did wonder if it was an early symptom of my diabetes which developed in my mid 50's.
