Can injuries from childhood cause issues in middle age?

When I was 10 I shut my right thumb in a volvo car door- volvo car doors were ginourmously thick . It was a mangled thumb, but recovered and although it looks different it has never caused any issues.
Now at 50 it has started to hurt when I bend it, I don't feel like I have full movement in it anymore.
I will pop to the dr at some point. I was wondering whether breaks we had as children become problematic in later life?

This is purely anecdotal but my DB had a similar accident to you - he now has similar issues and has had cortisone injections in his thumb which have helped.

Thank you. I read that old bone injury sites can be prone to arthritis which wouldn't surprise me. I have just realised that I avoid using the thumb.

bad breaks that are not healing properly can cause arthritis later in life.
it's very important to get 'bad sprains' etc seen to by hpc's

yes, that's what I was told when I injured a finger last year. I told them it was a fuss over nothing and they said it could cause problems later.
This was the 70's when I injured my thumb, I wasn't even taken to hospital- why not you might ask. Because I asked them not to take me.

I've been wondering this. I went over on my ankle when I was about 8 - just a sprain, swollen for a few days, then the pain wore off.

But that ankle has always tended to swell more (in hot weather, pregnancy etc), and now give me slight problems if I do a lot of steep walking etc. In my case it could be that that ankle was always a bit weak, but I suspect these things can come back to haunt us as we get older.

Definitely. I injured my knee when I was a kid, and because I lied about how it happened and how bad it was (I was doing something I shouldn't have been when it happened!), it wasn't properly taken care of. I'm going to need a new knee soon Sad

SaucepanMan26 · 29/09/2018 09:35

I think so, I badly broke my arm when I was around 7 or 8. I'm 28 now and it still tends to ache when the weather starts getting colder

Oblomov18 · 29/09/2018 09:45

Of course. All old injury's gone back to haunt you. Because said ankle/finger is weaker. Or maybe always was, which caused you to sprain THAT ankle on the first place.

(written before I realised OP mentioned arthritis) Arthritis is more likely in injured joints so that's where symptoms can arise first. Don't freak out because I said that. The alternative to ageing isn't so nice, though, so good to learn to roll with it.

SandraTheBee · 29/09/2018 10:19

I hurt my right knee in my 20's and it niggles from time to time.
yes, I am 'happy' to roll with it, not a lot I can do really. Just hope the rest of me stays in good enough nick.
