Baby name? Teddy or Edward?

My little bundle of joy is due in 2 weeks and as soon as me and my partner found out we were expecting we knew the only name for us was Teddy. We both love the name and can’t imagine calling out baby anything else. My only worry is when he’s older will he get taken seriously as a male in the work place being called teddy? We have discussed using Edward was his legal first name but always using teddy until he’s old enough to decide what he would prefer. I just want to give him options for when he’s older. WhT are people views. Edward or Teddy

Edward, as you say it'll give him the option if he wants.

Spudlet · 28/09/2018 17:31

We went for Edward, as it gives him options for the future.

HopeGarden · 28/09/2018 17:33

I’d go for Edward and use Teddy as a nickname.

Gives him more options when he’s older.

I had the same dilemma. We went with Theodore as a long name though as I didn't like Edward.

Edward, what grown man wants to be called Teddy

MaisyPops · 28/09/2018 17:34

I'm torn.
On one hand I find the partial MN obsession with giving a proper name you'll never use irritating (because you get threads like 'how do we demand school put out trixie's name on her GCSE certificates. Does never gets called Florence Beatrice. We only gave that as a proper name but she hates it and has never answered to it').

On the other, if you're going to call them by a common diminutive then the longer name makes sense.

I've taught a few teddys. Most migrated to 'Ted' by year 9/10. One remained an Edward throughout. I've even had y7s have preferred name as teddy and then in class asked if thry can be called Ted.

Personally, I wouldn't use a sing song childish sounding name as their birth certificate name though. It's hard to picture a 47 year old Teddy.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 28/09/2018 17:35

Edward definitely. But be aware he’ll probably be one of 2 or 3 Teddy’s everywhere, it’s SO popular at the moment

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 28/09/2018 17:35

Edward on the birth certificate, call him Teddy day to day and he can always revert back to Edward when he’s older if he prefers. I don’t see any downside in doing it that way.

icelollycraving · 28/09/2018 17:40

Teddy! I love it. I think it works as a cool adult name and adorable for a little boy. I don’t really like the name Edward anywhere near as much.

AppleKatie · 28/09/2018 17:43

Edward for the BC, for options later.

SOME men might not want to be called Teddy, I’m sure plenty will be happy to be, or else Ted is a perfectly ‘grown up’ name.

But still Edward is more timeless and gives more choice.

Junebug123 · 28/09/2018 17:54

Edward. More options and a lovely name. Would definitely be on my list of I had another.

BackforGood · 28/09/2018 17:55

Edward

EleanorLavish · 28/09/2018 17:56

Edward, nn Teddy or Ted. We call our chap Ted mostly, which is fine for a grown up too I think.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 28/09/2018 17:56

I think offering the option of a ‘formal’ first name is a good plan, purely as it offers scope for evolution as a person grows. I’ve not been known by my formal (incredibly overused in the eightie) name for years, but my diminutives and nicknames have been many and varied. It’s suited me well to be able to have that freedom.

BonnieF · 28/09/2018 17:58

Definitely Edward. Then, as he grows up he can decide if he wants to be known as Teddy, Ted, Edward, Eddie or Ed.

PotteringAlong · 28/09/2018 18:00

Edward. Definitely Edward.

sickmumma · 28/09/2018 18:05

I would say Edward -
We also have a Theodore - known as teddy.

FlibbertyGiblets · 28/09/2018 18:06

Is your surname Woodward?

Eeeeek2 · 28/09/2018 18:10

Edward, 100% give him the choice.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 28/09/2018 18:19

Edward, it's a lovely name. My friend's DS is Edward and his family nickname is Edward Bear, which is also lovely.

MollyHuaCha · 28/09/2018 18:21

Edward without a doubt.

Aprilislonggone · 28/09/2018 18:22

A Mner the other day said her ds was Edward on bc and Ward irl!!
Teddy is a toy imo.
Though a relative has a Teddy and a Barney!

ViserionTheDragon · 28/09/2018 18:22

Agree with Edward for the BC.

Elflocks · 28/09/2018 21:59

DramaAlpaca · 28/09/2018 22:00
