Urgent referral for U/S

I’ve just visited my GP for really quite horrible pain in my lower abdomen. I have history of dermoid ovarian cysts and have had surgery twice. Both times it was a very slow process of waiting lists (one for scan, one for consultant follow up and then one for surgery) taking about 9 months.

Today’s appointment she examined my tummy and did an internal. She then prescribed antibiotics for a possible IUD induced infection (though I don’t feel unwell, just in pain) and codeine.

Then she said she was doing a referral for an urgent ultrasound scan. She said someone would call me with an appointment.

What does this mean? A google of Urgent Referral brings up the cancer 2 week referral. Is that what this is? Should I be concerned?

How scary. I think she should have told you if she was concerned it was cancer surely? I've been referred twice on the cancer 2 week window and both times they were very clear about why they were referring and the process.

Hopefully someone will come on with better advice Thanks

Just because potential cancer gets a 2 week appointment, doesn’t mean every 2 week appointment is about cancer. Really doesn’t.

Maybe you’ve just got lucky and got a thorough GP who, rightly, cares about the fact you’re in pain, and wants to get to the bottom of it.

Try to step away from Dr Google, you’ll only find multiple things to freak yourself out about.

Good luck

Thank you, if it’s marked as urgent would that mean I will be seen within 2 weeks? I’ve never had this before!

She didn’t say the C-word at all, I got the impression it was to see if the IUD had migrated to somewhere is shouldn’t be. But I wasn’t taking much in, I was very sore from the examination.

I will indeed stay away from google!

My DH was suffering from terrible bloating and indigestion.... our GP sent him in on a 2 week referral, turns out he's got a hiatus hernia. He was very very stressed for those 2 weeks to say the least.............

Our GP does very quick referrals these days for undiagnosed pain. I just think it's how the system runs, tbh.

If there is a chance of cancer they can put you on the 2weeks maximum. Doesn't mean they think it is cancer.

I've had twice where one of the dc has been rushed through because the symptoms could be cancer, but the doctor has said it was an outside chance, and he was pretty confident it wasn't. Better safe than sorry in such cases.

I’m very glad she’s on the case, I guess I am just used to everything moving at a snails pace. Being rushed through is a bit disconcerting.
