Things to do in Nottingham?

For me, a middle aged woman who likes cultural things more than shopping.
DH and DS3 are going to Warhammer World, its like Mecca to them and they will happily spend two whole days in there. I decided to come with them and amuse myself going to museums etc but I have just discovered Nottingham castle is closed for restoration.
If there's a John Lewis I could probably spend a morning or afternoon in there browsing and choosing a new potato peeler very carefully but I need other suggestions including somewhere nice to go for lunch.
I am not a big shopper but do like a good craft shop or secondhand bookshop.
I would particularly welcome quirky or hidden gem type suggestions and would venture out of town as long as its on public transport (I'm from a very rural area and not confident about driving on unfamiliar busy road systems).

Not traditionally local, but Donotts in the market square do amazing doughnuts (the clue's in the name 😄)

remus I love the pudding pantry so much. DS has never quite forgiven me for being a sensible parent and making him have a sandwich in there once Grin

English - Evil parenting. Grin

Had the best flat white of my life in a place in Nottingham. Is it called the Wheel or something like that?

EastMidsGPs · 28/09/2018 18:23

Just off the Market Square (there is even a tram stop) there's the place market, the Adams Building is worth a look, as is St Mary's Church. There's a clay pipe makers grave there. And nearby is Debbie Bryan's cafe, it sells lots of lovely gifts as well as cake.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2018 18:28

I really want to like Toast but I am a fussy vegetarian who doesn't like eggs, and there is v little on their menu that I'd actually eat. :(

picklemepopcorn · 28/09/2018 18:32

Definitely not placemarking because I live in Nottingham and haven't heard of lots of these...

jent85 · 28/09/2018 18:35

Ooh it's also Nottingham Half Marathon on Sunday - there's always stalls, performers, etc and loads of amazing support - always worth a watch (but take extra traffic into consideration!). Always worth a lovely walk by The Embankment anyway and to see Trent Bridge, etc x

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/09/2018 18:49

I used to live right by Trent Bridge. Loved it there.

wigglybeezer · 28/09/2018 18:49

We are there Monday to Thursday but not til the 8th ( Scottish half term). Our last half term city break was Copenhagen, I'm doing my best to think of Nottingham as just as exotic and interesting, which it will be if I approach it with the right attitude!

How much time will you have to fill ?
Are you staying in Nottingham itself?

MargaretDribble · 28/09/2018 18:57

John Lewis Nottingham is carp.

adaline · 28/09/2018 19:07

There's tons in Nottingham!

Caves under the city from Broadmarsh shopping centre.
Lace Market/Hockley area.
Broadway Cinema.
The Cat Cafe just off Maid Marian Way.
The University Campus is really pretty and has a lake and such.

You're also not too far from Alton Towers - you can get a bus there/back if you wanted a day trip and like Theme parks.

Plenty of pubs, bars and cafes. Are you going with children? I love Pit and Pendulum but it's not really child appropriate!

picklemepopcorn · 28/09/2018 19:08

Where are you staying?

picklemepopcorn · 28/09/2018 19:09

Batman was filmed at Wollaton hall.

NoProbLlama78 · 28/09/2018 19:11

Wollaton Hall was used as the exterior for Wayne Manor in one of the batman films. It's a natural history museum with grounds and is a nicer building than Nottingham castle.
Hockley is nice for independent places.

Slatternsdelight · 28/09/2018 19:12

Purchase a firearm

NameChanger22 · 28/09/2018 19:22

If you go shopping they have Sostene Grene (Victoria Centre). I go to Nottingham just for that shop. There are lots of other good shops and a John Lewis. If you are really hungry there is Cosmos restaurant opposite John Lewis.

EverardDigby · 28/09/2018 19:22

Southwell is worth a visit for the shops, minster and workhouse, though I don't know about buses.

NameChanger22 · 28/09/2018 19:23

Remus - that junk shop has closed down now. I was very disappointed.

NoProbLlama78 · 28/09/2018 19:26

There's a windmill in Sneinton that has a little museum in it

sunshineandhappy · 28/09/2018 19:29

Bistro Pierre is opposite John Lewis. Brilliant value for lunch, £11.95 for 2 courses. My absolute favourite

wigglybeezer · 28/09/2018 19:36

We're staying near the railway station and canal apparently.
