Advice regarding ds- has fallen down stairs on a bike

EnglishRose1320 · 27/09/2018 18:40

Ds13 was out with a friend, tried to get off his bike to take it down some steps, got caught on the bike and fell with it down about 8 concrete steps, landing on a small bridge at the bottom, his shoe fell off into the water and he was stuck under his bike. His friend said he hit his head (he was wearing a helmet) and his arm whacked against the edge of the bridge. Now my issue is he says he can't move his a at all, no signs of any swelling. Where it gets tricky is ds has autism and is hyper sensitive to pain. I have no idea how to tell if he is refusing to move it due to the idea of pain or if he actually can't move it. It's not uncommon for him to not move arms/legs etc when he has knocked them but equally he hasn't had a big fall like this before. His friend said it looked horrible and ds was clearly in shock when I got there. When I arrived he was shaking head to foot and said his arm had stopped hurting and gone numb, then starting hurting again when I tried to get him up. Don't want to take him to get it checked out if it's unneeded but don't want to miss an injury. I suspect just bruising and shaken up but not 💯 sure.

Poor kid! Hope they don't have you waiting there too long.

EnglishRose1320 · 01/10/2018 21:18

We've had to leave without being seen after X rays, he was hitting me and running out, getting completely overwhelmed. Taking him for a drive to try and calm him and then may return, if not will have to call for results tomorrow.

What a nightmare for you all. We forget how many ordinary things can be stressful for so many people. I hope you manage to keep him calm and get back in for results tonight

QOD · 01/10/2018 21:41

Bless him. Will he agree to have a sling? Pretty sure that’s what they do for broken collarbone anyway. May help his pain ?

(Dh broke his as a kid and they’d JUST stopped doing that waist/bar/shoulder cast thing for # collarbones. He was devastated 😂)

EnglishRose1320 · 01/10/2018 22:15

Have managed the persuade him back but the wait time is at 4 hours so not holding out much hope. He has a sling on atm, I'm hoping he might get a slightly sturdier one and be told how long he needs to wear it by a doctor, he won't listen to me because I'm not from a medical profession.

Oh dear Rose! What a trauma for you all. I'm so glad you have friends and a GP who are supportive. What a shame the hospital weren't able to accommodate his needs this time.

I hope you get appropriate support soon!

notapizzaeater · 01/10/2018 23:01

Oh no, hope you get the results soon x

Knittedfrog · 01/10/2018 23:04

Have you explained the situation to the hospital. Surely they could try and see ds as soon as possible. I know they're are under pressure but it's a stressful situation for all involved. Hope you get seen quickly and your ds gets any treatment needed.

Fingers crossed OP [tea]

Thanks, have just left the hospital, thankfully no breaks but unfortunately a rotator cuff injury which will probably take longer to heal and also he has concussion, feeling like a guilty parent for missing that.

Oh dear, poor boy. Flowers

shearwater · 02/10/2018 04:51

I'm surprised they didn't diagnose all that at minor injuries.

EnglishRose1320 · 02/10/2018 08:08

Shearwater- the Miu went with the approach that he was probably fine and it was likely just his autism that was making him react like that.

So glad he had his helmet on! My son had a big dent in his after a biking fall, and not even a concusiion, but signs of one, vomiting ect. I figured he may have been brain injured if he was not wearing it.

You boy hit cement steps, it could have been way worse. Make sure you throw the helmut away, it is not safe after inpact.

Rotor cuff tears are bad too, but hopefully being young he is a fast healer.

EnglishRose1320 · 04/10/2018 07:42

I'm hoping he will heal quickly, it's just trying to work out how to get him to do the exercises, he is very reluctant to move it at all which will make it worse eventually.

LittleBookofCalm · 04/10/2018 07:49

can you find a paediatric physio? i am sure they will have some ways of encouraging exercising to make it fun?

EnglishRose1320 · 04/10/2018 09:31

In our area you switch to adult care for physio at 12- his paediatrician is pushing for him to be able to access the paediatric physio so just waiting to hear.
