Visiting Chepstow and Tintern

Would this be suitable for a long weekend (maybe 3-4 nights) with my DH (no DC) in October? The train takes around three hours from London. We're interested in sleeping and eating, i.e. having a break, visiting the castle and abbey, museum, pottering around, going for a walk (not 15 mile hikes). Could we stay in Chepstow and do a day trip to Tintern? I know the weather is risky but we were unable to go during September.

Its beautiful but you'll need a car to get about and good weather for walking.

It looks like there's a bus from Chepstow to Tintern, and we would probably stay in Chepstow most of the time.

Chepstow is nice for a few nights away. The castle is lovely and you can indeed get the bus to Tintern Abbey.
The bus and train to Cardiff is always an option for a day trip from Chepstow as well. Castle, museums etc. Hope you enjoy your trip .

You can walk from Chepstow to Tintern on the Offa’s Dyke Footpath. You could get the bus one way and walk the other.

Tintern to Chepstow you would have a steep walk up to the viewpoint of The Devil’s Pulpit. The views will be lovely. Then it sort of gently downhill or flat back to Chepstow.

Or starting in Chepstow, you climb steadily out of Chepstow to the Devil’s Pulpit and then a steep walk down to Tintern and the Abbey.

For a shorter walk you can just walk from Tintern and back. This guide says the walk is easy but the path is steep and gets really muddy in the wet.

I'm from near there and am a little in awe of people wanting to spend that long!! The Abbey is gorgeous and there's lots of walks, though my life there has been more pub related. Compared to London it's v sleepy. You could always get the train to Cardiff if you fancied something different, only half hour ish.

A sleepy little place suits me just fine. I need to get away for a few days!
